When I boot my BB DM I get a message that says I have updated application versions available, i.e., Blackberry 4.6 Core Applications, BlackBerry API Library, etc., etc. How do I know if I really need them?

Likely you don't.
DM always does that.

If you delete the blackberry device software from your PC it will stop. Since it's already on your phone, it's not like you need it. It's easy enough to reinstall too.

I did that, it never stopped it for me.
Guess it depends on whether DM likes you or not lol.

Yep, DM has never stopped bugging me about updates just press cancel.

I used Revo uninstaller to get rid of it. Moderately scorched earth setting. I put it back to blow out BBmaps. Then took it out again. Just connected to delete BBtran and no update poke from DM. I'm keeping transclick, but not for long as Navita about three times faster. You're so happy I shared... I run 4.6 so that might explain some of it, also recently started over with a new HD so my DM is a fresh install.
