Default Cingular 7290 Web Issues - Help?

Please Login to Remove!

Okay, I'm six days in to the BB world, and I love this thing so far. My only irritation is that the web doesn't do all I think it should. My 7290 (Cingular) came with mMode browser ready to go, and I've definitely got WAP. However, while I can get some wap sites, I can't get much. Plus, I constantly get error messages that say something like "web page is out of date" or something. Another common error is "HTTP Error 500: Internal Server Error." Is this common?

Also, should Avant Go work? I only get the Error 500 message when I try to launch it.

I can't even get Gmail's new http://m.gmail.com to work. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Use the Cingular web browser. I have the 7290 as well, almost a month into it (but not new to BB), you need to get the Cingular web browser. If it is not on your BB it is most likely because you have not updated your code to the latest. As soon as I did the code upgrade I got the full browser. BTW, Tech Support was clueless when I initially called by info from this forum is what lead me to a solution. Hope that solves the issue.

Thanks for the reply. Can you clarify? Where do I get this Internet Browser? Do I have to call Cingular or can I just download it?

BTW, I'm on an unlimited gprs non-BES plan.

Thanks...

Try resending your service books from the Web Client. You may even have to delete them first, but try just sending them once. You might want to read through the sticky FAQs at the top of the general discussion page or use this link.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. Sadly, there was no improvement. The only browser I see is "mMode" and it still gives me Error 500 messages. I can't even get a good mobile yellow pages directory or anything. Frustrated...

I think you have to install the most recent handheld OS to get the new Internet Browser. For the BB 7290 on Cingular, that's 4.02.49. When I installed it a few weeks ago, the new Internet Browser just appeared.

Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan on your account? Does it show GPRS or gprs on the top section?

You must have 4.0.2 or higher software to get the HTML browser. Also, some HTTPS sites seem to need the browser emulation mode set to IE or Netscape instead of the default which is BlackBerry. To change the emulation mode, when you're in the browser, click the thumbwheel and scroll to Options > Browser Configuration > Emulation Mode, if it says BlackBerry click and change it. Don't forget to save your settings.

SUCCESS! After many failures, I finally have it working. I upgraded to the latest OS but it still wasn't there. Then, I talked to a great rep at Cingular who talked me through many things. None of the things she suggested worked. As she was explaining that this was something RIM just wouldn't allow anymore for non-BES customers, I noticed a new icon for the Internet Browser appear on my main screen. Low and behold, it works now! Crazy.

Thanks for all your tips!
