I have a 8700c from Cingular that I upgraded the software on a few weeks ago. (PBr4[1].1.0_rel175_PL2.0.0.90_A4.1.0.194_Cingular) All has been working fine up until yesterday morning. I have my 8700 set to automatically turn off at 11pm and turn on at 6am. Well yesterday when I went to pull it out of the holster the screen was white with a picture of a battery with a red slash through the battery, it just hangs there and refuses to boot. When I put the battery or charger on it the LED stays RED for about 30 seconds then disappears and it shows the battery with the red slash.

I've pulled the battery and left it sit without the battery in it and tried reinserting the battery but I get the same results.

I've tried putting it on the chager without the battery and I get the same results.

I went to an AT&T store and tried another battery still the same results, I also asked if any of the 9 reps working had seen this issue and nobody has.

I tried using the JL_CMder to wipe the device but it does not recogonize the 8700. (What to do next if Jl Cmder will not connect and wipe - BlackBerryFAQ)

I also tried to reinstall the OS. I've downloaded the most recent software from AT&T site to install (8700M_PBr4.2.1_rel155_PL2.3.0.79_A4.2.1.96_ATT) but during the install process I get USB PIN UNKNOWN. However it does then recogonize my pin and goes to the next screen where it trys to wipe the OS and install the OS. When it gets to the 2nd step it fails because the computer cannot re-connect to the device and then it just finishes the loader with the error message "Unable to reconnect to the device during a multi-stage load operation."

Is this thing toast or can you anyone help?

I was going to say try a new battery...'til I read down further and see you did that. After everyting you've done, I'm stumped.

I really hate to say it's FUBAR, but I don't know what else. Hopefully someone will disagree and have another idea for you.

What was the issue when trying to use the FAQ?

I saw someone that had a simular issue with an 8100 in another thread so that was the reason I tried the JL_Cmder FAQ section.

I normally could trouble shoot most electronic devices but this one has me stumped.

I'm eligible for an upgrade at AT&T but I really hate being in a contract. I've been out of mine now for about 16 months. I got this 8700 for free so it's not that I'm out any money but I don't have a back up blackberry.

I'm debating to waiting for the 8820 or just getting the Curve.

I tried to wipe the device as in the FAQ but it just did not want to communicate.

I tried the MS-DOS instructions but that didn't work either. When I pulled the battery and reinserted and reconnected the cable I get the error message. A fatal error has occured and the only option is to close the loader application.

I was playing around with the JL_Cmder software trying to wipe this thing but I'm getting the following error message.

"Error unable to open port."

Any ideas?

Well I continued using the JL_Cmder program and was pulling the battery and reinserting the battery while trying to wipe the unit. I figured out that I had to wait 7 to 8 seconds to reinsert the battery while trying to wipe the unit. (whenever I put the battery in the LED would stay solid RED for 8 seconds) It was enough to kill whatever error I had because it now gave me the 507 error message.

I started the Desktop Manager and clicked application loader and low and behold it started to install the OS to my handheld.

I had this same problem and managed to fix it using this information. It took several days of trying, but it worked eventually and so far two days later the phone is still working. Thanks!

Yes, attempting to wipe the device with the battery out generally does the trick. Good advice.

I can't get any of this stuff to work for anything. I have the same problem with the battery w/the red slash. I am using the cs-1 battery and i was reading some of the other forums and they were sayin that could be a problem. I don't kno wat to do, and when i try to open JL_Cmder it jus opens and closes really fast. When i try loading OS, that message couldn't reconnect to blackberry when trying to do a multi stage task pops up. Could some one please help me with this thing.

I had the same problem about two months ago with my 8700g. After trying everything I ended up taking apart my BlackBerry and let it dry out. I didn't spill anything on it, but I keep mine in my front pocket and I guess it had absorbed some of my sweat.
Anyways, I took it apart completely and left one of my computer case fans blowing on it for several hours. I then reassembled it and have not had a problem since.
If you haven't tried a new battery you may want to.
Make sure that the indicator on the battery displays a red line and not several red Xs.

The battery indicator is not a moisture indicator. Nobody has gotten a straight answer about what it is, but it's definitely not for detecting moisture.

I wonder if this is the result of a BB virus, possibly. My phone just went into this condition yesterday. I have an old 7290 that I'm very thankful I still have. It has been my backup since then. I went to Batteries Plus and they didn't have the right battery for my 8700g. I still wasn't convinced that this was really a battery problem. Then I thought about this wonderful resource, Blackberry Forums. Thank you so much for this post! My 8700g is alive and well again. For how long, who knows. Maybe I won't surf as much if it is virus-related.

I had no success with JL_Cmder the first several times, either. Starting apploader without jvm didn't work, either. What finally worked for my phone was to start JL_Cmder, select the option to wipe the phone, type "y", type "blackberry" and then press Enter. THEN, I connected my USB cable and about 4 seconds later plugged in the battery. I finally got the white screen with the 507 error. Then the OS finally loaded via Desktop Manager's Application Loader. Yet another twist on this quirky problem. My battery is at a healthy 80% even off of the charger.
