Some email filters are working, some not?

First of all let me say thanks for the help in getting me up and rolling with my new 8100. I appreciate the help I have received.
Query:
Email received by my home ISP is forwarded to my BB email address. I have set various Cingular filters to allow email from a small number of senders to reach my BB and all others are filtered out.
Some of those filters work (allowing the emails thru to my BB), and some do not. I have no idea why. Some come thru immediately, and others take quiet a while, which I attribute to quirks in Cingular's system.
Is there any secret about using Cingular's filters? Can you use only a partial name like "Smith", or must you use "GSmith@ABC.com"?
I know I can have the email "pushed", but that happens at only 15 minute intervals rather than (usually) immediately.
