Try some canned air, or pressing down on the ball and rolling it in the opposite way that it seems to be stuck.

I notice when you roll the ball, you can feel a click rather than a smooth feel as it did before. I used the canned air and it still has this feeling. Is the phone defective

No, the phone is not defective. Most likely some debris got under the trackball. Power off the phone, press down firmly on the trackball and roll it in the direction you're having trouble (roll it in multiple directions if necessary). This should dislodge the debris.

I just took it out of the phone, soaked it in alcohol for a few seconds and blew air on it. Put it back in and it is like new.

I normally suggest rubbing it on your pants in all directions. Cloth mouse pads work really well too.

If cleaning the ball doesn't work, or soaking it in alcohol doesn't work you can always just replace the trackball. Its a pretty cheap part.

All trackball phones will get stuff underneath the trackball. Blackberry trackballs will also darken over time due to finger oil and other residue building up on it. Try canned air, or run the trackball back and forth many many times. This can sometimes cause whatever debris that was underneath it to fall out

I removed the trackball device. Are you saying to put alcohol on the trackball device that that you remove from the phone or is there a way to remove the actual white trackball?

Wirelessly posted

What I did was put the trackball in the cap and drop the trackball assembly into it and let it sit. It will disovle the oils from your fingers and when you blow it with air, it will remove the now loosen dirt and dry at the same time.

Does it just stick in one direction? It's possible there is some dirt or debris lodged on one of the four rollers. You can take the metal clip off and clean the individual rollers with a fingernail or paperclip end.

Or for about $7, you can buy a new black one with black ring and get rid of that nasty, dirty looking trackball. Should have been black from Verizon.
