I understand why BB doesn't automatically change time zones, but I'm not understanding the right thing to do when traveling
I like on the east coast. Let's say its 9amEST, and I have an appt already established for 10amEST. The alarm would go off in an hour.
But if I had some way to show up on the West Coast immediately, it would only be 6amPST there. The same meeting should occur at 7amPST, in one hour.
So, I reset the time (not time zone) on the BB to 6am. The BB still thinks I'm on the east coast.
Doesn't that mean that the alarm for my 10amEST would not go off for 4 hours, instead of the correct one hour?

Yes, that's absolutely correct.
But this begs the question... Why on earth would you do this? If you're physically within the Eastern Time zone... then you should keep the BB on the Eastern Time zone setting.
If/when you travel to the West Coast... then change the time zone setting on the BB to Pacific Time. All calendar entries and alarms would adjust accordingly.

To answer your question what to do when traveling, your BB would be set to eastern time zone when home, and you would change it to pacific when you travel in pacific time zone. Say you have an appointment at 10:00AM in California. With your BB set to eastern, you would select pacific time zone in your calendar when setting the appointment for 10:00AM. The appointment will then show at 7:00AM on your BB. And when you travel to California and change the time zone on your BB, that appointment will show in your calendar at 10:00AM. Your other appointments in other time zones will be shifted relative to pacific time, but will be correct according to the time displayed on the BB.

In Ireland.......taking it easy.....one time zone, one love. Never going on a plane again for fear of bumping into Vincent on a bad day.

Thanks everyone.
For some reason I thought all of the earlier posts where saying NOT to reset the time zone, but on re-reading, I realized that it was just advising you that when you set the time zone, be aware of how it affects your appointments.
I got it now

I do want to let the topic go, but have to add this is most significant to me with flight connections. Some, understandably, like to look ahead in their calendar and see their day as it will be. They want to see their 10:00AM appointment at 10:00AM, not 7:00AM. However, if you want to see the correct spacing of flights, and accurate layover time periods, it is useful to enter the times appropropiate to time zone.

I may be also missing the point (but I enjoyed my popcorn while watching the show..) but why not make it easy on the users and have the blackberry autodetect your time zones for you? Was there a specific reason they went against it or won't do it? Just curious, when it seems other cell phones have no issues changing the timezone. Unless the issue is with the calendar appointments being off once it's on a different time zone.
Thanks, sorry if I'm asking the answer to be rephrased I just didn't get the direct answer I felt was asked..

As you stated, the issue is with calendar appointments being off once the TZ is changed. Personally, I find it easier knowing that I have changed the TZ, rather than being surprised AND not sure if it has or not and needed to check with someone as to the correct time.

mattk0, I've looked back and tried to find the posts, but they are burried in the noise. You can look if you want. But as explained by who ever it was (jibi, maybe?) at the time, a big part of the answer has to do with the blackberry communicating with other computers, BES, etc. I don't want to try and repeat and get it all wrong. There is also a thread I remember in which it was debated whether or not the capabilty to autoadjust time is there but just not utilized by RIM or the carriers. Again, I don't want to try and repeat what I remember and get it all wrong.
But what is easy on the users? Some think this is a big design flaw, a big inconvenience, whatever, while others see it as no big deal, even preferrable the way it is. Like JS, I like having control over it, and I can see autoadjust being a problem if you are near a time zone boundry.
Finally, there's a good argument that it should be an option. Enable it if you want; or turn it off. Best thing is to put in a suggestion to RIM if you want. JS and others have posted the email address a number of times in these time zone threads.

I just got a BB bold and the inability to manipulate the time to my preference is idiotic. Everyone on this thread seems to have their own preferences which is exactly why the option should exist. My wife has an iPhone and uses the "TimeZoneManager" app to change things to her way of working. Seems logical to me. But there is no BB equivalent. Another feature her phone has is the ability to instantly see what time it is in multiple time zones. i.e. I have an office in Vancouver, Pennsylvania, Nairobi, Hong Kong and Sydney. I call these places most days and have a custom www@timeanddate@com bookmark on my PC so I can instantly see what time it is in each place. Whey can't BB have a similar function like this and which exists on the iPhone? For a device that caters to international traveling business types the time zone options are VERY VERY WEAK.

My Treo 750 does this, and it drives me nuts! I'll adjust my own damn time zones, thank you very much! To add insult to injury, the 750 shows Eastern Time as GMT-4 hrs, not 5 hrs, and this has screwed me up royally. Appointments go off by an hour, and if you're not up on it, you're hosed. The only fix is to find a GMT-5 hrs time zone, set that, then turn off network time, and finally go set the time zone back. Or just leave it wrong. Makes me crazy.
