I would hope that they allow you to disable 3G on the 9700. Not sure if the 9700 has the same issue as the 9000.
On a non-ATT branded 9000, it gives you three options: 3G, 2G and 3G/2G.
On a ATT branded 9000, you only get two options: 2G and 3G/2G. There is no way to force a 3G only signal.
I like the 3G only option while tethering as it ensures there is no switching.
