Yesterday I got a new cell phone for my wife. She just wanted a basic phone. It seems like virtually every phone had 3G and they don't sell 2G phones anymore.

Now, I am waiting for 8900 and have been trying to choose between the Bold and 8900. I like 3G, but would probably go for the 8900 based on the 248MG of memory and the 3.2MP camera, but...without 3G will I be buying a dinosaur? I recently saw a comment on Boy Genius (or BB Cool) that AT&T is pushing 3G.

Any thoughts or comments out there Is there any chance AT&T's 8900 will come with 3G?

I don't see a reason to buy the 8900.

The 8900 won't be a 3G device for GSM based netwoks.

Rumor has it that the 8900 will come out in 3g, but it's anyone's guess when and with which carrier (ATT?). ATT is indeed "pushing" 3g and has no plans to come forward with any more 2g smartphones. That's because their EDGE (2g) network is having capacity problems. Their 3g network is also having problems but they're probably investing $$ in that to handle the new phones (like the Bold). To illustrate, the Bold in Canada has the option to switch it to 2g if you're having problems with 3g in your area, the ATT Bold does not have the option. At this point many people who've used the 8900 on EDGE and the ATT of Rogers Bold on 3g report that browser page download times are about the same, so perhaps 3g is still a work in progress as far as download speed goes. Some also have issues with the phone trying to switch between 2g and 3g (dropped calls, etc). That could change of course, but leaves something to be desired with all the hype about 3g being the next great thing. WiFi kills 3g no matter what. So it depends where you are and how well/fast 3g is there whether or not the 8900 is a dinosaur for you. I know for me it will be at least as good or better than an ATT Bold, so I'm planning on getting one. Remember: every phone is a dinosaur after about 1 year. The iPhone was and the Bold will be too (it'll have a better camera, more memory, better screen, you name it), They make you sign a 2 year contract so they can get their $200-300 bucks back but most phone geeks get a new one at least once a year.

EDIT: On another forum a person posted today that his Tmobile 8900 beat his buddies' 3g ATT Bold downloading the same webpage by 8 seconds, and his pals' Storm (Verizon) by 20 seconds at the same location with exellent signals, thus verifying that 3g has a ways to go for most people's needs. Tethering is a different animal (the Bold is faster at that).

I would perfectly agree with you on that.. sometimes 1 year is also too long a time.. like the BB 8920 or 9220 (I am not so sure of the model number but it is rumored to be named "Magnum".. given then specs it could be soon out with ATT.. who knows !!! It is a 3G variant of 8900 series with supposedly faster chipset and better display. It's 3G frequency is same as ATT.
