Default Help! Blackberry 8830 World Edition

Please Login to Remove!

I'm new to blackberry and have a Sprint 8830 Blackberry World Edition I'm trying to use on an At&t sim card. Is this even possible (I have an unlock code) but it says I have zero trys left. Not sure what to do as I have read you can't use this phone in the USA (Florida to be exact) but have seen otherwise. What do I do? Thanks ahead of time.

Typically, the "world edition" phones from CDMA carriers have CDMA frequencies for the US (850/1900) and GSM frequencies for non-US locations (900/1800). According to PhoneScoop (Research In Motion BlackBerry 8830 Specs & Features (Phone Scoop)), the Sprint 8830 is such a phone... and it clearly cannot be used as a GSM phone on the 850/1900 frequencies. The only 850/1900 frequencies in this phone are for the CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) radio only.

what about the zero tries part when putting in the unlock code? I'd still like to input the code and unlock it to sell it for a different network.

Not possible. If there are zero tries left, the phone is locked forever.

That deivce can only be used in the US on the Sprint network.

Since you have zero tries left, the phone can not ever be unlocked now. Once you use up all the unlock attempts, the device is locked to the original carrier.

Come to think of it... isn't the Sprint 8830 unlocked already? I seem to remember that it ships unlocked.

The 8830 was only designed to be used overseas in GSM mode. In North America it will only work on the CDMA carrier that issued it.

World Phone Edition models after the 8830, like the Storm, can be used in GSM mode in North America once the GSM portion is unlocked.

1st determined if your BlackBerry is "unlocked"

1. On your BB goto Options > Advanced Options >Sim Card.

2. At that screen type MEPD on your key board. A new menu will pop up.

3. Look for Network in the list

4. If your device is "unlocked", it should say Disabled or Inactive. If it says Active, it's still locked to the carrier.

Need unlock code to unlock phone.

Locked Device should say the ff:

Personalization:

SIM Disabled
Network Active
Network Subset Disabled
Service Provider Disabled
Corporate Disabled

UnLocked Device should say the ff:

Personalization:

SIM Disabled
Network Disabled
Network Subset Disabled
Service Provider Disabled
Corporate Disabled

I have a 8830 CDMA locked with a local carrier but I am also able to switch to GSM mode anytime by putting a GSM SIM card in it and selecting the GSM mode from the Network settings.

That's wonderful.
Try doing that in the United States and see how far you get.

This thread is beyond ridiculous at this point.

I unlocked the front door of my house today and walked into the neighbors house. Was quite shocking.
