Default UMA / EDGE handoff

Please Login to Remove!

I am using UMA a lot since getting the 8900 on Tmobile 2 weeks ago and love it. But I noticed a minor problem, not a huge deal, but I'm curious if anyone else has observed similar behaviour.

I am on a call at home using UMA. When I leave the house to go to work, it switches to EDGE but the call gets dropped.

The opposite switch from EDGE to UMA when I come home on the other side is seemless, the call does not get dropped and instead is being handed over to the wireless network without any problem.

Seems like the seemless handover should work in both directions... ?

It could be an issue in your area. I would contact TMobile and see if they can help. My calls go back and forth from UMA to EDGE and EDGE to UMA with no problems. Works fine on my 8320's and my 8900.

Also, keep in mind that calls can only had off from UMA to "TMobile" EDGE. It can't hand off the call to a roaming partner.

Smile problem with handoff

Yes - same problem. In most of my house I get UMA from my wireless browser. If I am on a call that started while on UMA and walk out of reach of my router, as it hands off from UMA to edge the call gets dropped. This certainly is Tmobile Edge. It is a pain. I suppose there is someway to turn off the UMA as I really don't need it. I assume I can do that without turning off the Wi-Fi? Haven't checked yet.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Yes, go to mobile network options and change it to mobile network preferred instead of wifi preferred. I would call TMobile, though. Its either a network problem or a router problem.

what firmware are you running? I had a lot of hand off issues running .152, .133 has been working the best so far. I agree with John, check your mobile network options also.

I'm having handoff issues as well....works perfectly fine if I'm talkign on UMA, but if I walk out of range of the router, the phone call drops and the phone goes to SOS for a few seconds while it relocates the Tmobile system.

Mine also drops call from UMA to cellular. I am using t-Mobile's "Super" router and still issues. Running .133. If I switch to mobile preferred I go to SOS immediately in my house downstairs so UMA is necessity for me. Would be nice if handoff really worked but always drop call when leaving home on a call and also drops most of time if on a call and drive into garage before UMA picked up. I plan ahead with calls and terminate calls and then redial when I have service. Real pita.

Huh, I'm using T-Mobile's WRTU54G-TM router for my @Home service and have that wireless dedicated to UMA. Before that was using a WRT-300N running ddWRT and I've had no trouble with handoffs from either of those routers with my 8320 and now 8900.

One thing to keep in mind though, if your wireless signal drops too fast too quickly you will drop the call. It needs enough time to see the strength is dropping and needs to initiate the transfer to the edge network. Try walking slower or pausing a few seconds if you're going through a doorway, or going outdoors.

Thanks HaTaX. One thing I ordered that should be here later this week is WiFi signal booster that replaces the antenna on the router with an amplified antenna. Hopefully that will boost wifi greater distance so will drop off when I am in area with stronger edge. I think the problem is my edge is weak till I get outside the house.

Kinda have a similar thing going on here at home and actually I have a repeater in the house for T-Mo / Sprint and Verizon EVDO. (That combo just works out with the frequencies it operates at). My house has aluminum siding, it turns my house into a RF trap and so signal has a hard time getting in and out of here.

Normally I go out to the garage which is attached, and doesn't have the siding blocking the signal. The router is on the other side of the house so by the time I get out there, the signal is low enough it's trying to switch over to EDGE. That's probably why I don't have much trouble with it, found a pattern that works and I follow it every time.

Here is my issue, John Clark maybe you can shed some light. I thought I saw it somewhere but could not find it again after searching. I am having issues with dropping calls when switching from UMA to EDGE, let me preface that I have my Linksys router set to the settings that you have in the FAQ. Here is what I have discovered, I have a extremely strong signal, I can get about 100 feet from my router and still maintain a very strong UMA signal (was shocked). I called TMO and we tried a few things and it would still drop, then I disconnected my Jawbone 2 walked outside across the street and the hand off did not drop the call. Went back inside and connected my JB2 repeated and the call failed as soon as the switch over took place. TMO has no clue, I tried this several times with the same results. Does anyone else have this issue as well? Also when on my JB2 talking on UMA after about 5 minutes I can no longer hear the other person and have to end the call and call them back then I can talk for hours. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Bluetooth definitely affects UMA. UMA and Bluetooth used to not work together at all. I would make sure your OS is as up to date as you can find and that the firmware on your router is up to date, as well. Also, it can be caused by different firmwares in bluetooth headsets.

I have the latest OS and firmware is current, thinking about doing the flash to my linksys router to see if that will help but does not sound like it will. I have an insane wireless connection so don't really need to boost any power so I guess if I am going to talk at home will just have to use the handset and switch over to my Jawbone once I get in the car. Thanks as always, and by the way, referred about 10 people here yesterday at my Camera shop that I live in (another very expensive passion like my Blackberry's)

My UMA hands off to EDGE during my calls when I walk away from my house talking on the handset (no BT).

Yeah mine works like a peach too on the handset, hate talking on the handset though, I want them to fix it so I can do it with my Jawbone 2 which never leaves my ear.

I'm also having some issue, whenever I make a phone call in my garage or in my room, UMA drops to EDGE. I tried updating my router's firmware and changing the channel, but that didn't help. Maybe I should get an extender for my router.

That may help, an extender should definetly boost your signal in those areas. When I was testing my BB to see if it would drop, I had to walk across the street to almost my neighbors front door to finally get it to drop my Wifi. I am just running the linksys WRT54G and get incredible signal strength, and the router is in my living room where my 360 is.

Just checked my firmware in T-Mobile router and is latest firmware and I have 4.6.1.168 OS and still drops leaving house or returning if on a call. Signal always shows x then will connect after 10-15 seconds but call is lost of course. John mentioned putting mobile preferred but am afraid to do this. If it does manage to connect to mobile in my house it will lose it almost immediately and then take time to find my wifi again. I am waiting for a signal amplifier for my router and then may try this then.
Just frustrating.
