There is this person on craigslist.org (Portland, or) who is offering a brand new in the box 8900 from T-Mobile for $300. I want to know what others think of this.
I contacted him, asked the process. he said he is authorized independent T-Mobile dealer, he said he would credit my T-Mobile account enough to cover the cost to purchase the phone from T-Mobile direct and then when I receive the phone from T-Mobile, I pay him direct through western union only $300

I told him ok let’s do it. He asked for no info as he already had my cellular number from me replying to his craigslist ad. He texted back saying in had a credit of $625.00 on my T-Mobile account. I logged onto mytmobile.com and yes it had a payment of $625. Now he tells me to order my 8900 directly from T-Mobile customer service or through mytmobile.com and only pay him once I receive the phone in the mail! I asked what is in this for him and why would he want to just do this? "He replied I get commission off every customer that buys a phone at the end of the month"

Tell me what you guys think and how fishy this sounds! Thanks

Sounds completely fugazey to me. I wouldn't be surprised to find that credit somehow disappears or is questioned by T-Mobile and frozen. It just smells of a scam to me. One word of advice: Run.

I'm guessing you're not eligible for a full discount through tmo yet since tmo offers the BB for $199 after rebate.

I checked out his CL ad, another note, the guy misspelled blackberry - "blackberyy" - my point is, how can you trust someone who can't even be professional and spell the dang word correctly.

I totally agree, who's to say he's not going to debit your account after he gets that $300? and Western Union = Fraud...

I would NOT go through with this.... the only way I would is if you got the phone First (at no charge to you), then give him money. Do not under any circumstances give him money up front. But still...

Not to mention he will have your account information... no one (especially a guy you have never met before) should have that information.

This is a HUGE red flag.

I would be wary in buying phones off Craigslist. I know there are legit postings on craigslist, but every ad I have answered or when I post something on craigslists list. All I get are scams!

And I suspect that as soon as whatever payment method he gave to TMO turns out to be fraudulent, they will quicly debit that $625 out of your account and probably add additional fees for bad check or whatever so it will end up costing you a lot more in the long run.

Any time any transaction on ebay or craig's list or whatever mentions using Western Union, you should run as fast as possible away.

Interested in hearing back from the OP how this plays out (even though hopefully, he did NOT send anything to the vendor).

Very suspicious -- and I would be VERY concerned that this guy has full access, apparently, to your T-Mobile account. If he can credit your account, can he also debit your account? Could move money into it, then move it back out again? Whole thing is shaky.

Buy it! You'll either get a great deal, or learn a lesson you apparently haven't yet.

Maybe he posted a forged check for $625 to your account in your name. If that's the case, it could show up as a debit. It would take up to three weeks for Tmobile to find out that the check is wrong, and they would reverse the debit on top of probably charging you a hefty fee for a returned check.

At that point, you already paid your $300 through Western Union. Take a picture of the money as a souvenir, because you will never see it again.

Just note, I didn’t give this guy any info. Not my name or anything. All he has was my cell number from when I text him from the craigslist ad. I just called T-Mobile to verify how I had $625 credit on my account and they said it was not a credit; it was a payment with a check!

I told them the whole story and they couldn’t believe it and were very concerned. They are notating everything I have told them and they have removed the payment that was made. T-Mobile verified that no one has accessed my account and they seem to think that the only way he could have made a payment to the account was through the automated system because all it asks for is the cell number that you want to make a payment for.

Pretty sure he paid my account with a stolen check then wanted me to order the phone from T-Mobile with my $625 positive account balance then pay him 300 through western union, then a few days later I would get stuck with the check bouncing or reported stolen then I get stuck with the cost of phone from T-Mobile and 300 sent to the scammer!

I have a 4page conversation with the guy I saved from my phone converted to a pdf if anyone wants to read! Pretty funny but not going to SCAM ME! I was totally messing with the guy in the text messages trying to get him to blow!

The reason he wanted everyone to text him was so he'd have your mobile #, could go to the retail store and make a payment on it using the mobile # lookup (with a bad check I'm sure), and make you fall for it.
