Default 3G or not

Please Login to Remove!

I am finally coming round to upgrading.... Tried the Pearl but my fingers are too big...so,

Can anyone give advice on choosing between a 3G or non 3G model?

8700 here in Hong Kong is a Quad band 8700 on GPRS

8707 is a similar unit but works on 3G

Both have almost the same specs but the 3G unit is more expensive to buy and the monthly fee is also more expensive.

Of course I could wait until the 8800 comes out but I love my trackwheel!

Any help gratefully received...

Why

do you really need 3g, are you going to use the device as a laptop modem?
if you're using the device just as a berry then the 8700 which has an Intel processor is faster than the 8707 which has a diff processor, oh and better battery life etc..

you'll even find RIM types admitting that the 8700 is a better user exp than 8707..still it's your money...

Um, the 8707's processor is exactly the same.

Don't put out bad info.

Do you need 3G?
How often do you buy a new phone?

If you need 3G and pay for the 3G service in Hong Kong to tether your laptop as modem, go for the 8707.

If you do not use the 3G service and only use the BB for email, and surf the web when you are in MTR or bus, you can go for the 8700.

When the 8800 comes out, just sell your 870x and buy a 8800.

If you do not use your 870x as a modem with your laptop, it is a waste of money for buying a 8707. It is because you can't play video from BB; the internal memory is small in 8707 (i hope I am right?!).

After all, it is your money.

This is not "bad info". The 8707 does indeed have the somewhat slower Qualcomm chipset. Unlike the GPRS/EDGE models which use the Intel xScale.

There is a sticker on the 8707 which says "CDMA by Qualcomm".

The Qualcomm chip is simply the radio. The 8707 has an xScale processor just like the 8700, 7130, 8703, and 8100.

^You disagree...you should know better...the Qualcomm chip is the radio, not the processor.

There is a disclaimer on the page you cite that says "we cannot guarantee this information is 100% correct". And of course, it is not.

The 8707's use the MSM6500 Qualcomm chipset, which does not include the xscale processor.

Further, if my recollection serves me correctly, this info was posted on GSM Arena prior to the unit's commercial availability--so much of it is likely speculation based on prior 8700 series units that were available at the time.
