It's an Exchange 2007 issue. BES 5 cannot run on the same server as E2K7.

I run about 40 users in a ESX VM.

Load up Hyper-V on your SBS and use that.

Seriously, it likely cost you more to buy all those WinMo phones than it would have cost to get a lic of W2K3 to run on Hyper-V.

Hyper-V is not supported on SBS 2008.

You can run VMware Server with a Win2003 installed, however it will give additional errors in the SBS console, because the additional network adapters are not supported by SBS 08 and the Best Practice Scan will point that out in your daily report.

If you don't mind these error messages, I run SBS 2008 Sp 2 incl Ex2007 sp2 with VMware Server and it works fine.

canuck - actually i got 3 touch pro 2's for free with sprint (normally $350 each) plus my monthly bill decreased because i dont need BES anymore. so truth be told overall it saved me money. PROBLEM IS THIS win mo6.1 is so behind it is insane and win mo7 wont be released till mid 2010, add to that the bold 9700 looks realllly nice!

Nielo,

As an alternative for an installation the size of sleeper, loading W2K3 on a workstation would to the trick.

Or go the other way around. Load up the server with VMWare ESXi, then load SBS2008 and W2K3 as 2 virtual servers.

But, SBS 2K8 is delivered including Hyper-V (it even comes with a second installation key) - why is this not a supported configuration ?

Yes, the premium comes with a second key, but you can not install your Win2k3 as a virtual server running Hyper-visor hosted by the SBS 2008.
Well you can, but it is not supported.

I can not post the link to the SBSblog however type : sbs 2008 hyper-v role cannot install in Google and it should come up as the first result.

However running the second Windows as your Hyper-visor & BES app. and the SBS as a virtual machine should work and be supported, however this might cause some performance issues on the SBS side.

Overall in this scenario, for a productive environment, I would either install ESXi as recommended by Canuck or get some random whitebox with 1 or 2 GB RAM install W2k3 on it and run it as your BES with a SQL Backup of the database to a SBS 2008 fileshare. Just in case the HDD dies.

If your upgrading to new hardware do what I'm about to do put bes and win2k3 on the old hardware saves using a VM.

We run a SBS and TS and are about to bump everything along to 2k8 with SBS on a new server win2k8TS on the current SBS hardware leaving the old TS hardware for a server running bps. Getting bes off the same hardware as SBS also seems like a desirable outcome.

Free SQL Server database backup, Zip and FTP software script for SQL Express 2008, 2005 works well too if on a budget.

what is the advantage to doing this, especially with so few users and such a powerful sbs server i cant imagine it would strain the sbs box would it?

BES cannot be on the same server as E2K7. The only way to shre the hardware is to go VM.

The requirement, and I'm not sure if it's all the BES' fault, is that BES cannot co-exist on the same server as Exchange 2007. Your Windows license allows you on instance of a VM. Hyper-V is free. Use it.

We are talking about BPS and it can be installed on the mail server.

Issue is SBS2008, BPS install is not supported.

Does anyone know if RIM has a timeline to make BPS support for SBS2008?

Edit: What is BPS is this what the BES express that i had previously on my last server is now called? is this in V 5.0 also like BES or is this still in the old 4.x like express was?

ok so i checked around and BPS is what was formally known as BES express, so i already have licenses for that product, thats great! It appears the current version is still held back at 4.x though, that kinda sucks.

Now all i need to know is when will BPS support sbs 2008, when will BPS 5.x be released and when 5.x is released is there an upgrade fee or will my existing Licenses work. Anyone know or heard any rumors?
