"Orphans" or "Ghost" messages with BES and exchange 2007.
Please Login to Remove!
This is the scenario...
I have exchange 2007 on one server, and in another server I have BES 4.1.7 running... I have one user (which is really square minded) which every morning, with his BB turned off, he checks his mails through his iPad or MAC, and answers some of them, he deletes some of them and he leaves some of them on the Inbox...
By now, I would see on BES "Pending data packets" a high value number because all the new mails that havenīt been delivered to the BB... the problem is that when the BB is turned on, this users sees all the new mail on his inbox, and then the ones deleted will be gone, but sometime he will get one or two orphans that couldnīt be deleted, and he makes a really big deal about this..
Three things..... I have "Hard Delete" option to true, he canīt do hard deletes on a MAC (maybe has to wait more time between deleting a message until he empties the trash can?), I have set the maximum (1000) Message state database.....
Is there anything else I can do to make orphans and ghost messages dissapear??

You can deleted it manually, but the user refuses to do that....

it is the way Entourage handles the status with a legacy setting in exchange that BES does not use.

On the iPad, there is no Entourage, and, on the Mac there might be AppleMail in use.
Are those accounts both set to Exchange, and, on the Mac, does he use entourage or apple mail ?
If he uses Entourage, and if he runs MacOS 10.6, try what happens when you use apple Mail instead (dont try apple mail if he has MacOS 10.5.x, the Exchange support is not very good there).
And, what happens, if he only uses the iPad, and not his Mac temporarily ?

Are all accounts setup for Exchange, and not IMAP ?
And, again, the version of appleMail matters. If 10.5.x, maybe upgrade to 10.6.
With 10.5.x, the sent messages from mail will not appear on the BB, with 10.6 this works. If you have 10.5.x there is a chance that your problems also might be less, if you upgrade the OS.

Sorry for not posting the version...
He uses the lastest version, 10.6... with all the updates...
In every account he uses Exchange, not IMAP....
He used to have an iPhone, it worked perfectly....

try reloading the user on the BES. Sounds like something in the MAPI profile from Exchange may not be communicating to the BES.

Did not work... I have upgrades from BES 4.1 to BES 5 Express on the same box as Exchange 2007 with Windows 2008 SBS... after some headache I finally managed to get it to work, but still I have the ghost messages, I donīt think it has something to do only with BES, I think it has something to do with BES + Exchange 2007 + iPad + Outlook + MailMac all together.. hehehehe

That correct, but,
it works with Apple Mail on 10.6, and should work with entourage 2008 for Mac Web Services Editition.

Because I tested OWA and every single message was deleted properly, but not with Apple Mail (the most recent version).....

I have myself, using Apple Mail on 10.5, (and have the problem as in the KB article), but I dont experience what you see,
I have someone else, using apple mail on 10.6 and outlook 2003 + Blackberry BES 5.0.1, and there are no problems.
hard delete is set to off at my server.
I dont think that apple mail is the culprit, but since I dont have exactly your setup I cant tell.
But I think the KB does not apply to your problem, because it regards to outdated software, which you do not use.

I will have to run some test, from Outlook PC, from Outlook Mac 2011, from Entourage, from Mail Mac, to see if I have the same outcome...... this is driving me crazy because I am getting close to getting fired because of those orphans.... :(
Before I had this problem, but the main problem was the antivirus software that was creating messages conflicts.... but I am sure thatīs not the problem this time...

To sort out outlook, disable cached/offline mode in outlook 2007.
Regarding apple-Mail:
I experience sometimes a thing, that, If I write a new message, a copy of the Message will be saved in the Drafts folder, even, If I had sucessfully sent it.
Also, sometimes, When I send a Message with apple Mail, the mail will be tagged as "unread" in the sent items folder.
If the inbox is large in apple mail (>about 4000 items), apple mail might overlook some new emails, it even might hide some messages which it had seen previously. However quitting the application and starting it will make it fetching the Messages again (but, this occurs AFAIK only in 10.5.x apple mail).
--------
Email clients are getting worse today, because many people read their mail with the browser. So, Developers do not spend much time developing nice email-clients. Still Apple-Mail is one of the better ones.
