Hi everybody,
we've upgraded our bes/bas to 5.0.3 mr3, after the upgrade the console il slow and often unusable.
If i do a search for a user i've to wait 20 mins before i can see the response.

Can someone help me on this?

How much RAM does does your Machine have, and, what other processes are running on this server ?
What kind of internet security/Antivrus is running on this system ? Try to disable/uninstall it and test again

What hardware is the server running on ?
How many users are connected to the BES ?

If you have a simple installation of Server 2003 2GB of RAM are ok for running BES. for A few users a machine with one CPU is enough.

hi, it's a vmware machine with 4gb ram and a 2.83 processor.
its a simple installation with a SQL and about 200 users and no AV running.

and, vmware is not set to overcommiting the RAM ?
If possible turn that feature off.
Also if you use thin provisioning of for the virtual disk, this might lead to delays if the server needs more harddisk space for a short time.
Or move the BAS instance to a different computer for testing purposes.

But, before the update it worked normal ?

I have not much in depth experience with vmware + BES (my BES runs inside a microsoft vm). So the above tips are of a more general nature.

When you upgraded to 5.0.3, did you also upgrade your database server from sql 2000 to a newer version or did you already had SQL 2005 or newer installed - that also could impact performance.

before upgrading everything was fine and smooth, is it possible to install only BAS on another machine and point to the SQL instance? how to do this?

Just start the installer on a different machine, check to only install the BAS service, and point it the BES server you want to connect it to.

Afterwards either disable the BAS and the BAS-NCC service on the BES or uninstall it, and remove it from the BES configuration.

Which setup do i have to download? The full or express?

The setup file you used for installation of the BES server.
It should be still present on the disk of the server where you installed the BES/BESx

When i start the setup it prompts for: 1. New server with new db, 2. New server with existing db, 3. New bes router. Do i have to chiose The 2 one?

Do you have a BES Express or the full BES ?
anyway, there should be no difference here.

log in to the machine where you want to install the BAS instance with the BESAdmin user (give the besadmin user local admin rights on this machine before)

then.. from the manual:

Install a BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express component
on a computer that is separate from the computer that hosts
the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express
Before you begin:
xxx8226; Install a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server Express and the BlackBerry Administration Service in your organization's
environment.
xxx8226; Verify that the BlackBerry Administration Service is running on a Windows® account that has permission to
access and modify the Windows registry on the computer that you want to install the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server Express component on.
1. Using the Windows account that you created, log in to the computer that is separate from the computer that
hosts the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express. This account runs the services for the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server Express components.
2. In the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express installation files, double-click setup.exe. If your operating system is

18. In the Console addresses dialog box, copy the web addresses for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express
components and paste them into a document for future reference. You can use the web addresses to log in to
the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express components that you installed.
19. ClickFinish.
After you finish:

anyway, "error connecting" while installing and after i've set db connection, but the db is up and running...

Does your DB allow remote connection over TCP/IP ?

on the BES server, if you go in the SQL 2005 Configuration manager,
then protocols, then TCP/IP, then the TAB: ip-adresses.
you should see the servers IP Address in the list.

or, to check the connectivity from a remote MAchine:
login as the besadmin.
in the controlpanel, computer mamagement, launch the ODBC Manager, add a new System DSN using the Microsoft SQL client, then enter the hostname of the server hosting the database or, if you have a named instance, enter the hostname\instancename
click next.
Either connect using trusted windows connection or enter credentials which allow login to the database depending on your database configuration.
klick next one or more times. in the last dialog, you are able to test the datasource.

Is this a BES Express or an Enterprise version ?

From what I read, there should be no difference if you install the BESx or the full BES regarding installing an instance of BAS on a different machine, however I have an only an enterprise version, and the procedure above worked for me.

maybe, disable the BAS Service on the BES. Also, dont forget to apply all updates so that the BAS has the same revision then the BES on the Server.
Then restart the BAS service on the machine, where you installed the new BAS

now i've the following problem, its always slooooow, but, when i manage to add a new user this error occours on app logs:

com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database requested in login 'BESmgmt1'. Login fails.>

and the user cannot be added...

But, this is on the current server, not the other where you installed the BAS service ?

The Bas serice needs lot of RAM when used (maybe up to 800MB), but normally is idle, and therefore the memory might be used for other things by vmware (if memory overcommittment is or if you did not reserved the 4GB exlusive for the guest OS)

Have you checked the memory settings of the guest regarding memory setting ?
