Exclamation Don't Leave Memory Clean Enabled on 9930

Please Login to Remove!

When you go to OPTIONS - SECURITY- ADVANCED SECURITY SETTINGS - MEMORY CLEANING you can Enable the memory cleaner and even place a shortcut on the home screen. If you do this, it will a) never place a shortcut on the home screen and b) will take 10 minutes for your phone to reboot itself. I thought my phone was bricked when doing this. I tried this more than once and it happens each time. Once I disable and uncheck place a shortcut on the home screen, the phone will boot within 2 minutes. You can still enable it and do a clean then and there but just disable it when done as it will take 10 minutes to reboot the phone when you do a battery pull or a hard reboot. Obviously another small bug in this OS (7.0.0.254).

Preroll - what does the Memory Clean option do and why were you using it?

I just wash mine with Tide. Keeps the memory clean and spotless.

Which is a bit more useful than the Memory Cleaner.
I await Preroll's answers

It was recommended awhile back by one of the IT guys here that you should clear out old cached data on the phone. It clears the following:

-Certificate Search
-Certificate Status Manager
-Clipboard
-Content Protection Cache
-Encrypted Messages
-Key Store
-PGP Key Search

It was also recommended to clear the Event Log every so often as that builds up and takes up space. Obviously, if you're having an issue, you'll want to keep the log but if not, wipe it out (ALT-LGLG).

Preroll.. true, it does the above cache clearing you mentioned.

Primarily, what it does is this: "All Java® objects are stored on the BlackBerry smartphone in random access memory (RAM) or flash memory. Normally, when Java objects are no longer needed, the memory assigned to that object is released to be overwritten by new data. With the memory cleaner turned on, the BlackBerry® Java® Virtual Machine (JVM) overwrites the memory using zeroes before it is released. As a result, data cannot be retrieved from the memory chips."

More importantly, I'd suggest you ask your IT guys to read this:
Article ID: KB19371 BlackBerry smartphones with content protection and memory cleaner turned on may experience slow performance

In short, what Memory Cleaner primarily does is performs a zero-overwrite of already deleted memory, to a higher government specification. For the average user that doesn't work for the CIA, FBI, MI5 or is not a prOn or drug dealer, it's a worthless process hog.

Because this is worth repeating. And the event log uses about 16kb of memory. Not enough to even worry about. As has been said MANY times.

Good to know. Thanks for the info. Guess I don't need to stress over cleaning as much then!

I guess the OP had both turned on, because I don't have content protection enabled - but memory clean is, via our BES policies, and I have no issue with performance or reboot time (95 seconds or so). Now that I know what M/C really does, I'll disable forcing it through the BES policy. I learned something new here today!

Same was on mine through every release of software, yet I had no issue. Turning off the M/C however, does cause the phone reboot to take about 15 seconds less time for me. It's now down to about 75-78 seconds from a battery pull.
