Question Will the 9700 be able to utilise OS 7.1 ?

Please Login to Remove!

I cannot seem to find any information online that points to the possibility of using a generic copy of OS 7.1 flashed on a Blackberry Bold 9700.

I desire to have Wifi hotspot feature on my 9700 and that's the only reason for OS 7.1

My apologies if this was previously asked before...

Thanks.

Nope. Been asked many, many times. Search would have provided the answer.

The 9700 doesn't have the memory and horsepower and can barely run OS 6. No device that doesn't ship will OS 7 will be able to run any version.

WIFI does work on the 9700 including hotspot or free locations you dont need OS7

provided you have a BB data plan

What I meant was to have the 9700 function as a "Wifi hotspot" similar to the OS 7.1 feature. But I guess the 9700 cannot do that based on this post:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...-ipad-2-a.html

Anyways, thanks everyone for the responses.

It cannot be a hotspot.

To be clear - does this include 9780 as well? Reason for asking is that many providers have released OS 7 for the 9790 and I'm not familiar with how the two higher versions of the 9700 series compare.

Yes, it includes the 9780 as well.
The 9780 did not ship with OS 7.

The closest thing you can use is version 6.0, which looks exactly like 7.0, but you navigate with the trackpad instead of the touchscreen, which the 9700 does not have. I had used 6.0.0.499 a lot and to me it is basically using 7.0 without the touchscreen. It uses up a lot of your device RAM, and periodically you may have to do battery pulls to free up some memory from time to time to keep it snappy. If my 9900 breaks down or gets ripped off, I would be perfectly happy to go back to my good ol' 9700.

Want 7.1 just for the WiFi hotspot? Tell your friends to get their own data plan and stop leeching off you.

Allowing the phone to be a hotspot for others is a sure way to exceed your data plan limits and cost a lot more on your bill. Even unlimited plans can actually have a limit.

That's a pretty ignorant comment.

There are plenty of very legitimate reasons why a user would have use for the WiFi Hotspot. None of which involve the scenario you stated.
