Default Bold9700 GPS question-anyone can answer

Please Login to Remove!

I haven't yet purchased a BB9700 and had a simple question about its GPS function. I sometimes go hiking in the mountains where there tends to be no cell reception but I'd still like to use the GPS to mark where the car is for when I'm returning to it. How well would this work?

Could someone please:
1) Turn off all wireless communications
2) Save a marker (without a pre-loaded map)
3) Walk 100ft or so away from that spot
4) Set marked spot as destination
5) See how BB responds (blank map with current position and destination marked? Compass towards destionation?)
6) Report results back to me

Thank you in advance!

7) PS don't forget to turn back on your wireless communications

It works but is useless without cell coverage since it uses that to download the maps.

That's fine. When I'm hiking through the woods I don't need to see a streetmap. Does it let me use waypoints as a destination and point me in that direction?

Without data, all you have is a lat/long on the GPS page. No navigation at all. To get a map and directions, you have to have a BB data plan and cell data coverage. And when the battery runs out, you are lost.

If you plan to do a lot of hiking and walking in the woods, a stand alone GPS is a much better solution, along with a couple sets of fresh batteries.

Can it set waypoints? I suppose if all else fails I can just write down the coordinates of the car on a piece of paper and then when it's time to go home check my current coordinates, do some quick trig, check a physical compass and start walking.
