Don't despair and give it another chance. I am very happy so far with the latest beta release. Makes for an improved BB9700 experience
OK GUYS! I am new to the forum but have been using a blackberry for some time now and have fiddled with a lot of Handsets (8900, 8520, 9700, 8220, 8700) and multitude of OS'.

I upgraded my 9700 to the OFFICIAL 6.0.0.424 and have to admit that it seems Blackberry is moving from an "Apple" (Reliable / Niche / Solid Device & Platform) to a "Microsoft" (Mass / Buggy / Half Baked ) mode.

The upgrade process was seemless, but it was later that I realized the following:

1. For an unknown reason (so far), the device fails to identify the network as "EDGE" instead continues to display GSM net to the signal bar. I have spoken to the Operator and have tried across combination of SIM / Handset / Locations, problem persists with my 9700 running 6.0.0.424. Solutions will be appreciated.

2. Sucker for Device Memory : OK AGREED, before you even get started, OS6 was meant to be for the newer handsets with higher device memory, however, I dont see any reason for existing user to upgrade if its gonna drop to a <50MB level. Even though I havent come across any functionality issues, but have an eerie feeling that its around the corner.

3. Some things just dont work: Cant change themes / All folders and settings have gone for a six (ok this can be brought back) / some new Installs dont even show up in any Folder / Menu / Search, Device Boot is painfully slow.

SUGGESTION:

REmeber when Microsoft announced its famed (now scorned) windows Vista and went around showing how chic it was (from an interface perspective) but later we all realized how Buggy and Useless it was from a usage perspective. To me is a perfect anology for how the OS6 is for the older (slightly, though) devices.
I would recommend people (unless u cannot satisfy your itch to see it for urself), not to upgrade, atm, and wait for a slightly more stable version.

Yes...all said and done...I may be the unluckiest F**** around and its just my device which may be facing some issues, but so far whatever I have seen and read across various forums, I can only see more "Nays" than "Ayes".

And yes, the interface does make for an exciting experience, in comparison to the rather bland 5.0, however, is not justified unless there are fixes for these issues in the upcoming versions.

so agree with you.even if looks shinny, glossy, fancy or new, i prefer the old os.5.i just prefer to wait for a stable .os6,for now, my latest os.5 is stable, no buggies, no memory leaks, no dissapointments so far.

Good. Then stick with 5.0 and be done with it.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. I istalled it on my TMO 9700 running the latest OS5 release without wiping and it is running great! Its faster, no cursor issues, etc. Onlu thing is the battery life but let's giuve that a few days to settle out.

1. I checked the Vodafone device OS from blackberry there is no "OFFICAL" 6.0.0.424 out there but there is a 6.0.0.380. this shouldn't play an effect on your network connection though. when it is showing GSM, I would say it is more related to your network.

2.As been stated before you can use a 3rd party program to to shrink the OS, I have used BB Boss V1.1, basically if you are willing to upgrade to the newer OS 6.0 you are will to suffer if you don't do it or take the time to maximize efficiency with the OS. A OS shrinker program would be Ideal for that.

3.Themes have not been put out for the 9700 with 6.0 you might want to take a look for the 9780 themes as it is the same display and theme resource that would be on the 9700 running 6.0.

4. you also mentioned device boot time... if you were to take a 9700 with 5.0 and a 9700 with 6.0 software put them next to each other and turn them on a the same time you will noticeably see that the 6.0 will win on the OS loading up. if it doesn't I would say that you have had a few issues with the update on your device and show reload the 6.0 OS on it.

best case scenario you can go to Beta You Than Me within these forums (or click on the link) and get the leaked version that is now 6.0.0.480 and try that.

hope this helps to clear some tension over this

Is there a list of .COD files that you can keep/remove? It seems that one of the language .COD's is holding me up... I'm 99% there but something keeps hanging up... please tell me someone has done this and documented it??

Thx...

try to exclude the languages that you don't need I just leave my native language on there and leave it at that

^^^

There isn't even a choice to select "English" (USA) or not.

Do you know if I'm trying to exclude something that I should not be?

Edit is Voice Activated Dialing an issue... I HATE having that but it seems to be a common denominator when I have issues with locking up.

I'm still removing something key - because I'm not able to setup email... Here is what I removed most recently and it works great - except that I can not setup web-mail. It asks me for BES/Enterprise activation but nothing allows me (even att.blackberry.com) to configure web mail.

Thoughts??

have you had your BIS set up before? if so call att and get them to send your device the service books
or you can go to options > device > advanced system settings > host routing table
from there click the menu key and then go to register now that should push the network service books down to the device

When would it be appropriate to update the 'latest OS 6.0' sticky to .448?

I've been using it for a week or so and it doesn't have of the problems mentioned above (inc. missing SMS cursor, and buggy scrolling)

To be listed at the top of this forum it has to be an "official" release by a carrier. 6.0.0.380 is officially released while everything else is beta.

I'm getting a missing cursor in Whatsapp and Beejive. Also the scrolling in Ubertwitter messes up if you scroll too quickly

Downloaded OS 6. Everything works well, using themes for 9780 seem to work.
