hopefully someone knows a little about this and can answer this for me. I'm wondering if when RIM is working on a specific OS revision, for example .602 for ATT, do they make changes that have been "requested" by ATT? what I'm getting at, is I'm wondering if it is possible for a revision to be custom tailored for a specific carrier. and maybe THAT revision would perform the best on THAT network. maybe ATT asked for improved voice quality and asked for an OS that would handle signal differently that would cause an improvement. and if so, maybe running a newer OS (.743) that might not have these specific changes could result in negative effects.

maybe we shouldn't be constantly upgrading to the newest release. maybe we should be sticking with the latest from our carrier

i want to hear ALL of your opinions please!!

code -> carrier
carrier -> tweak maybe
release

RIM don't tweak the code for each carrier.
They write the "general" code and give it to the carriers to tweak if they wish, which they generally don't.

As far as upgrading the OS, IMHO, there is no need to do so if the device works for you as you need and want it to work. It isn't broken so there is no need to fix it with an OS upgrade. Besides, you risk bricking it or, in many cases, losing some previous capability.

people upgrade to each version hoping to get performance improvements. the fact that RIM releases newer versions suggests that there ARE improvements to be made. i have installed EVERY OS made for the 9700. i have seen for myself the improvements and benefits of installing the latest OS even when from another carrier. but lately, in the last couple of months i have been having issues with holding a 3G signal. it wants to fall back to EDGE most of the time. its for that reason that im actually considering DOWN GRADING to .602 wondering if maybe my issue was addressed in that version

If you want to DOWN GRADE then you should DOWN GRADE. No one can duplicate your experiences with your BB, in your area, with your towers.
DOWN GRADE if that makes you feel better.

WOW that wasn't helpful at ALL! this is getting off topic. i DON'T KNOW if i want to down grade which is why i started this post. i'm looking for intelligent responses to my original post...

Actually it pretty much sums it up.

You have to do your homework and make the decision to upgrade, downgrade or stay with the same version. It depends upon your situation and your needs, not those of anyone else.

By doing the homework, I mean reading what people experience and post here. Keep in mind, however, you will generally get more problems with the OS than the kudos. If you are an early adopter and leap in just as the new update is released, then you become the guinea pig for everyone else.

If you want to be very conservative, use the latest version of the OS that your carrier has released. Whether that is a DOWN GRADE or an UPGRADE is for you to decide.

No one can tell you what version to use.

If you are using the latest AT&T version (just released and significant lower than .743) and are having problems, then it is either device or tower or location related. Which doesn't answer your question either.

the topic of this thread is NOT about my connection problem. i have a different thread about that. the topic of THIS thread is about OS versions and if a carrier has any say about the tweaking of it. so actually, there IS an answer. thats not to say that any one here knows it or not. and thats fine. it was a shot in the dark, and its ok if no one knows. but i get real frustrated when threads get off topic. as this one attempted to. if you dont know the answer the the original question, then dont say anything.

midnightdraven was the ONLY person to offer information on the topic. so i thank him for that

I don't know the answer to your question, either... but I do know that MidnightDraven is a "her".

RIM supplies the code to the carriers, along with release notes. Occasionally, and very rarely, the carriers release the notes.

Therefore, we don't know what is or is not tweaked in the code, or what outstanding problems are in the code.
