Default at&t/cingular

I just received an AT&T 7290 in the mail. For whatever reason, when I ordered it they sent the AT&T version. Here is my question:

1. Is there any reason that I should sent it back and request a cingular version?
2. Will this device (in both data and voice) freely roam between the two networks?

Thanks

On this one - when you turn it on - it says AT&T on the network portion.

That's dependent on your area. Until a few weeks ago, my phone still said AT&T for its network too. Eventually, Cingular will convert the IDs on all the towers in your area to Cingular. Just keep it, it's fine.

Biggest draw back and it may be moot is whether it is unlocked or not. Cingular units used to be unlocked while AT&T were not.

I was in the same boat. I'm returning mine for either the cingular brand or I'm thinking of switching completely to Verizon. I ordered a Cingular 7290 and they sent an AT&T. Cingular customer services says that "most" functions will work but "some" features may not. of course, they couldn't tell me what will and what won't. Seems very odd. What I'm thinking is that it doesn't matter now since Cingular and AT&T GPRS works the same and independently but once they start shutting down or converting the AT&T to Cingular, you (we) will start losing service.

BTW, the AT&T unit seems to be "unlocked" since I can put in a Cingular SIM and I get voice service. (The Cingular data--not Blackberry, just plain data--service doesn't work on the AT&T 7290.)

I just ordered a Cingular 7100g, with a Cingular plan, off eAccess and got this in email:

"Your Order: 1 RIM BlackBerry 7100g SIM 260 32MB (AT&T)"

Why does it say AT&T? Should I be worried?

I think you are worrying too much about a name. The ATT name will be around for a while, while the collision of the two companies is worked out.
The features are all the same.

Me too. But I read somewhere on this forum that even though it says this in the email, the Blackberry will have the Cingular logo on it. I'll find out tomorrow morning when its delivered.
