I have been doing some digging around on the monitoring service but have a few questions as my searches have found conflicting information.

Does the BES 5 Monitoring service require its own database?

If it does can this database be hosted on the same servers that host the Configuration database?

I am also not completely sold on even installing this role within my environment as their are third party tools available that can perform monitoring of the BES servers one such that I can think of is Zenprise. What is everyones opinion on the BES monitoring service versus a third party monitoring tool?

That said, the Monitoring service monitors your current BES database. No additional DB for this.

I use Boxtone with BES monitoring and find it works for what I need in my environment. It's part of the BES install so no additional $$ for it.

BMS does install it's own Database usally BMSStore

From what I have been reading I cant really see a reason to install the BES Monitoring service over using something like Zenprise or Boxtone. It seems like it is so limited to what it can do in comparison.

Does anyone disagree with this? Or would you use on of these products and just forget installing the BES Montioring Service?

No additional cost for the Blackberry Monitoring Service. That's really the only plus.

Well looks like I will drop the monitoring service server from my design and instead put in a third party tool since they can monitor more than just the basics of BES and they can monitor exchange as well.
