Hi guys,

if i have my wifi enabled and connected to my home/office wireless router, then when im browsing the web, messaging etc.... does it use the gprs or wifi? When i look in the top right of the screen it seems like its using GPRS all the time. Is this right? How can i make it work on wifi at home/office?

Check Options -> Mobile Network -> Connection Preference. Set it to 'Wi-Fi Preferred'.

Then when you are connected to WiFi the Browser should use WiFi.

When you are in the Browser you should see a WiFi icon in the upper right corner when it is using WiFi to browse.

I see from your details that your carrier is Orange. Is this Orange in the UK? If so you can tell how much GPRS you have left by calling Orange. Dial 150 then go through the menus (hit 1 then 1 then 3). It won't tell you how much over you go but will let you know how much you have left (until it hits 0).

Marin, you have options within the Mobile Network to specify connection preferences? I have an 8820 and do not have that option. I have an 8320 that does and wondered why the 8820 did not. What OS version are you on? TIA.

yes i do have the options and preferences. Its in the menu. How do i check the version? cant find it.

Please go to Options > About. You should see it in the 3rd or 4th line. Something like "v4.2.2.xxx (Platform 2.x.x.x)"

Did you load your device's OS from a RIM site or was it preloaded with this version when you got it?

i also have an at&t 8820 that does not have an option to set the connection preferences. my options/about indicates v4.2.2.169 (Platform 2.4.0.67). i am frustrated that my at&t 8820 does not have an option to let me set my preferred connection preferences. is it possible at&t is going to have to do an update before customers can enjoy this feature? i paid $500 and am feeling kinda let down

separately, i finally found a speed test site (toast.net) that would let me generate results on my blackberry 8820 (www.toast.net). i have never gotten a speed test using (just) wi-fi on my at&t blackberry 8820 that significantly exceeeds what i get using (just) EDGE. 70+ to 80 kbps max downstream -- using either -- even though my home wi-fi network tests at over 5.1Mbps downstream on my company wi-fi laptop

is it possible at&t has dumbed down its 8820's wi-fi capability to keep EDGE looking competitive?

t-mobile's version at least allows user to set his or her connection preferences; guess i'll have to ponder later whether to stay with at&t for bberry service

it came preloaded and its v4.2.2.124 (platform 2.4.0.58)

Is it possible to reload the version in order to access to set the connection preference?.
Will be possible to set Marin OS version to have this option in the menu.
It is very important when you are abroad and need push emails/chat and all thru wifi free spots
I am also frustrated as the other comment
