Question MS Exchange SP2 Installation

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,

We are preparing to roll out SP2 for Exchange and I have a couple of newbie questions.

The current version of the ESM on our BES is 2003 mit SP1. Do I need to install the SP2 version on the BES? If so, what is the best way of going about it?

Also if I install the SP2 version of the ESM, do I have to do anything additionaly to ensure that the mapi32 and the cdo.dll are the appropriate versions?

Thanks for your help in advance.

So, maybe I can answer a portion of my own question.

Here is how I am planning on accomplishing this:

1. Backup the Server including the SQL Database.
2. Sutdown the BES
3. Install Exchange SP2 on the BES
4. Ensure that the cdo.dll and mapi32.dll are the same version as on the Exchange Server
5. Install SP 4 for the BES
6. Install Hotfix 1 for the BES
7. Install Hotfix 2 for the BES
8. Reboot the Server

Have I missed anything?

I hadn't read about the cdo.dll and mapi32.dll versions needing to be checked...anyone have more on this? Do the mapi32 and cdo DLL files actually change from ESM 2003 SP1 -> SP2?

Is the BES running on Win 2003? If so I believe you need to install SP1 for windows prior to installing Exchange SP2.

I have compared the versions of both files with an existing exchange 2003 SP2 server in our test enviroment and our productive BES running ESM SP1 and they are different.

Thanks for the tip. The productive BES, which I have inherited, is a Windows 2003 Server running without SP1 for the operating system.

I have checked the release notes for Exchange SP2 and MS is saying that SP1 for windows 2003 is recommended but not required. How much this recommendation affects the BES is a gray area for me!

None of the blackberry upgrade doc's reference those files needing to be updated. I think as long as those files were setup with your original BES 4.0 install you should be ok.

We upgraded to SP4 HF2 this morning, so if I come across any issues I will let you know.

Sorry, I am going to have to disagree with you.

The BES Installation Guide states that "You must install any Exchange Service Packs that are installed on your messaging server" and since we are rolling out SP2 for exchange then I assume that I will need to install SP2 for Exchange on the BES.

Regards,

Max

That is correct. Any ESM installations you have should be at the same patch/revision level as the exchange server you are administering. This applies wether or not you have a BES, which means it is applicable if you have a BES.

So yes, you ought to service pack the BES

Ahhh I see what you mean now. I applied SP2 to ESM on our BES today as well.

Thanks for the heads up.

Just a heads up. Ever since we applied BES SP4 & SP2 to exchange on the BES server....event log warnings have significantly increased to maybe 1-2 per day, if any at all. Previously we were receiving 30-40 event log warning messages per day. Getting the MAPI & CDO dll files in sync seemed to fix alot. Thanks again for this.
