Default Customization or creation of Administration Roles in BES

Please Login to Remove!

I am currently building a BES environment to consolidate down the 4 separate environments hosted at my organization. We are running Domino 7.0.2 as the back end and SQL Server 2005 for the database. Currently the system is up, running and mail flows to devices as what not.

Where my question starts is that we will have roughly 1800 users in this environment which are spread across 5 major locations in the USA. Unfortunately I am only in one of those locations so this lends to leveraging the roles in the BES Admin client to delegate access in the remote locations for support/trouble shooting.

What I have found is that none of the roles really fits that need. What would be perfect is if I could “merge” the Sr. Helpdesk role, with the Admin Handheld role. But I would be quite happy if I could simply add the ability to add and remove users to the Admin Handheld role.

Any advise, instruction, or links to procedures would be fantastic. I have spent a bunch of time on the phone with RIM T-support and they have been completely unhelpful (stinking not supported) so I am now turning to this board whose always been my best resources for information.

I'd consider giving the user the Enterprise Admin role just because that's the closest you will get.

Unfortunately I am uncomfortable giving that role to individuals in each of the separate locations. I have been able to locate where I believe the specific schema objects are where the roles are delegated, but they don't match up to the listed/useable rights of the existing roles.

So, for the sake of discussion (as I am going to screw with the rights in SQL in the attempt of this because I am still pre-production) has anyone else come across this need/desire and if so what did they attempt.

Thanks

What are you trying to limit them from doing?

I am attempting to limit them from adjusting the Global or server settings, including restarting or removing BES servers from the environment. Along with other such administrative rights which the Desktop staff at my organization donxxx8217;t need, and frankly donxxx8217;t want.

It is a little frustrating that they canxxx8217;t obtain rights from multiple roles, but thatxxx8217;s a limitation of the software.

Our BlackBerry support staff gets the Sr Helpdesk role. They've been able to do everything they need to.

One thing we did had to change was they have to do wireless enterprise activation now instead of of wired device assignment because they don't have access to the Device Management screen.

Tim

My thoughts were similar to your initially when trying to find a setting for my sidekick but then looked harder at the roles and went with SR helpdesk for this user (IIRC). It's a shame that there's no 'customisation' but hey role based admin was new in 4.1 so it is a new toy. I was surprised at the number of 'audit' roles they seemed to have rather than helpdesk type roles which struck me as a little strange

What I am looking at doing now is having a "trusted" person at each location with the Enterprise Admin role, then delegating out to all the Desktop Staff the Admin Handheld roll for software updates and general device servicing needs. I am not thrilled about having to follow this path, but hopefully with features described in the BES 5.0 Delayed thread here this will soon become a moot issue.

I have the same issue. Sr. HelpDesk Admin Role is fine, except they don't have the ability to assign software configurations. I wanted this ability so that whenever they add a new user, that they are able to assign the DST Patch configuration, as that is pretty important I think.

Can you tell me which schema objects you found seem to be doing the delegation?

Also, what are the corresponding Audit roles? What do they have/not have compared to the regular roles?

pointless (IMHO) - I don't see the need for an audit role. All it gives you is read-only access to a lot of the settings.. and i don't know about you but since when do the bean counters audit devices on the BES...

Question This may help

Why not consider a remote access software?

logmeIN (google it, i cant post URLS)

You can try LogMeIn for 30 days free trial.
Basically it uses java scripts, and ActiveX once the connection is established its P2P (hence to why the speed is amazing) you can Remote anywhere, so why not establish remote access that features 256bit SSL, and virtually unhackable (sounds crazy try it out)

- This way you can delegate admin rights for server manager, and keep track all the computers with admin rights in real-time.

(this may not be the solution for you, but it would take a closer look)
