No one knows why.

For instance, my 9530 on ATT does not have the limitation. It is not a limitation of the device, or the OS, it is imposed by Verizon on the device.
It's a tactic to increase sales, more messages = more income (charged to those who text without a texting plan).
Not really a tactic. When the phone splits it, it still sends just as many texts. So if it splits it into 3 text it will still send 3 texts.

As far as being limited we are so lazy these days. If I have to text more than 160 characters I will just pick up the phone and call the person jeez just my 2 cents.

What if I don't want to engage in a conversation further than my long SMS? I have plenty of those instances? Or when my minutes are over? I don't like that there is this limitation... however, is it a matter of laziness? To an extent, absolutely lol

+1 on this.

Its a Blackberry, use email. If you email a cellphone number, over 160 chars, the carrier will automatically split it before sending it.

Huh? Knock knock! You've got it backward. By allowing the phone to automatically split text messages over 160 characters into TWO text messages, the user is unwittingly fooled into sending more text messages... Limiting to 160 (the actual limit of SMS) is the HONEST thing to do!

That's lame. I'm jumping to Sprint from T-Mobile in less than a week.

If we have unlimited data monthly plan, I don't see what's wrong with using PIN messages.

There's nothing wrong with PIN messaging. The only issue you'll run into is you won't be able to do this with non BB users. As with SMS, you can send SMS to pretty much anyone, blackberry or not.

Nothing wrong with PIN. Unlimited, unlike some SMS plans. Problem is, you can only communicate with BB.

Nor do I. That was just an aside - though I do feel that if carriers are going to let you write SMS that feel like a single text but get split into 3 texts, they should provide very full disclosure. I'm willing to bet that many if not most people believe when they send a 400 character SMS, they're only being charged for one transmission.

I don't mind the 160 limit for sending SMS, becuase I think being brief is the proper thing to do for SMS. However, I wish the incomming messages were not truncated. Being involved in Emergency Services I get CAD messages when my company is dispatched. Being on Verizon those messages are truncated after 160 characters. Other members of my company on other carriers get multiple page messages showing the entire dispatch. Luckily, the important info (address, cross streets, nature) are in the first 160 characters, I loose part of the description.

WoW, this has been covered for sometime now! Like JSanders said, It's a CDMA (VZW) provision that they have set into the the network for Blackberrys. My at&t phones, which are mostly Blackberrys let me type as long as I want. VZW stops you dead in your tracks at 160. So to all those saying it's not not network related issue... it is!

They aren't truncated, they're just split into two messages, right?
