Hi,

I have just taken delivery of my 1st Blackberry. I am very impressed, and enjoying the phone.

I currently have a Netgear N-150 WNR1000 router with the latest firmware.

I have connected the 9700 succesfully to the router (WPA2/AES encryption) for Wi-Fi, but, experience frequent dropping in connection, even with a very strong signal.

Having trying to find the answer on various internet forums, I suspect that some 'Routers' are better than others to use with the BB 9700.

So my question is; can anybody recommend a router that does not drop Wi-Fi UMA connection to the 9700?

I have been using Linksys equipment with different model BBs for several years with no trouble. But that doesn't help answer your question.

How far away is the BB from the router when the signal drops?

What frequency band are you using?

I had a DIR-625 and it did not work with the Torch, the Torch kept brining down the Wifi for the entire house, since this was the version from 2007 I went and got a Linksys e2000, with the shipped firmware it did the same thing, but after upgrading the firmware it is working fine.
I've read that its an issue with the combo WPA/WPA2 encryption types on Wireless N routers, if you specify just WPA on the router you should be fine as well.

my BB9700 will bring down within a minute the whole wifi of the D-Link DSL2741 if connected (need to connect to DLink with a wire, go to maintenance status and wifi will revive!... until the BB is reconnecting, it will kill wifi again!).
So with this tip I will try to set it to WPA only and see what it does.

I can be standing right next to the router when the BB wifi drops.

What frequency band are you using?

I have no idea? Router freq band or BB freq? Where to look etc?

I've been working with WiFi since the very early days when 11mbt was as fast as we could go. Having used routers from a dozen different vendors I can tell you not all routers are created equal. As has been mentioned, Linksys is a great choice. T-mobile uses a variant of a Linksys as part of their service. I've had very good success with Buffalo as well.

We have a complete sub-forum just for WiFi here. I would suggest you read through some of those threads for a lot more information about making WiFi work with any BlackBerry. The 9700 has been rock Solid for me as have the 9800 & the 9000. The 8820 was pretty much hit and miss. But with today's releases, I am much more inclined to go with router issues than BlackBerry issues.

indeed, if I tell my router not to use mixed WPA/WPA2 mode but WPA only, the connection is A LOT more stable, no more router radio outages, blackberry does not kill it. I did notice 1 short outage of the router during a 1hr test but within seconds the router was back reconnected.
So Doughboy seems right, thanks for the tip, happy to have back stable wifi at home and the BB connected to it!

Very wierd. I have a Linksys WRT54GL at home and it works fine for the 9700 and the rest of my stuff connected to it. Never a drop. At work I have a el-cheapo $12 router I bought at Fry's (Fry's brand) that I'm just using as a switch and WAP. No problems there either. Actually that Fry's el cheapo works like a champ.
