I dont understand this thread. Why do you need a data plan if you have wifi? What features do you miss out on without having a data plan? I keep seeing everybody saying "i need email". But email dosent stop if your using wifi. So i dont understand the disagreement
Wow, why do these threads always have to turn into a debate? I saw the title on this thread and thought I was going to find an interesting discussion on the great programs and features that can work with the Bold via wi-fi.
There are many BB users out there the for many reasons either can no longer afford to have instant email or never had an interest/need/$$$ for it in the first place. My teenagers love the Pearl 8820 and 8900 because of the great keyboard for texting...that is what teens do, text. Email is for us old timers. I like BB devices because of the quality of construction and simple maintenance (e.g. pull the battery to fix most OS issues).
So what can you do without a data plan: Great media player (watch full length movies, music, pictures), Podcasts with PodTrapper, watch TV with SlingPlayer, synch Outlook contacts and calendars, get email (check out the beta release of LogicMail, works well even on 5.0.100 OS), Pandora has wi-fi only settings, BB Weather beta will let you get weather updates for all your favorite locations, take pictures or movies, surf the web if you are so inclined with Opera, BOLT or the hotspot browser.
BlackBerry's have become a very rich and full featured device, especially the Bold and the 8900. It is nice to have a full data plan if you need to have instant email, but instant texting meets the needs of many people. I have no doubt that RIM would like everyone to be using a BB even without a data plan and the carriers are in getting the same revenue stream as if the user stayed with their existing phone.
