Default What are the benefits of using wifi?

I have setup wifi profiles at home and a few other places, but I'm wondering how having wifi enabled benefits me? Does the phone use wifi instead of the 3G connection to download/make calls?

For email, downloading attachments, etc., yes. The benefit is a much faster download and connection to the device.

For calls on ATT, no.

WiFi data is typically faster than 3G data.

No, it does not use WiFi for phone calls on AT&T. (T-mobile has this feature though.)

WiFi is useful for data access in areas that there is limited or no wireless coverage, but WiFi hotspots are available.

It can use the WiFi to send/receive emails, IM, browser, and some third party apps.

no matter what provider you are on... there is no UMA for the bold (calling through wifi)

all would be... like viigo for example, it updates faster if you have alot of RSS feeds coming to it... it just makes the stuff over the internet faster thats all

And the most obvious - you don't pay to use wifi. Anything done over 3G you PAY.

Not on AT&T. Their data plan is unlimited.

Nevertheless, one allows you to be in control (wifi) while working over 3G means having to rely on the infrastructure of any given carrier. This is why the Storm sucks now.

Depending on what you are doing over the WiFi connection, you are still relying on the carrier. In order to send/receive email and IM, the WiFi connection must be able to connect to RIM's network through your carrier.

Wifi on my Bold is superfast, I sent a 2MB video file by email, I dont think it took more than 10 sec's. I wasnt timing but I was shocked. I sent the same file over 3G and took forever.

Another thing it gives you is access to the network the access point is connected to. For instance, in my office if I'm connected via Wi-Fi, my handset has a local ip address and can connect to a server on my network that's not exposed to the public.

If you're on BES, you get the same functionality without WiFi as well.

Well, to be 100% correct...only if the BES server is on that LAN or has access to it via VPN.

Exactly. If you have a hosted BES you probably don't have access to your local LAN.
