I have a icon of an envelope with a tiny red dot on its upper right corner.
the icon won't go away and I cannot find any unread or unattended message anywhere. what is the icon telling me? how can I erase it?

Check your saved messages (Message Folder>Menu>Saved Messages). Also check WAP messages Message Folder>Menu> View Folder>WAP Push Messages.

Make sure you check your MESSAGES folder AND your email folder... Also, your SMS

looked in every obvious nook, folder, browser book mark.
If I could remember how to open the clever otter case I would yank the battery.
Soft reset doesn't touch it.
I see now that the handheld is not able to sync to my laptop. I suspect something is corrupted.
is there any reset trick beside alt/shift/delete?

Changing the theme is what worked.
