Yes you will both need BlackBerry devices with a BlackBerry data plan. Then you will need your friend's PIN number to send a request. From there, your friend accepts your request and you are good to chat!

I just started using this recently myself and am enjoying it, and saving money re texting. But the basics can be learned by going to the menu button while in BB messenger and pressing help. Again, all the basics are there.

I however would like to learn more: for example, what the various icons, symbols etc are that show up next to messages. Anyone know of a good place to find more detail?

Can't remember where the list of icon definitions are...but I need to look it up for another friend, so I'll let you know when I find it.

But in the meantime, in blackberry messenger, when you send a message, you'll see one of three icons:
-a plain checkmark, which means your message is on its way to the recipient's blackberry
-a checkmark with a "D" on top, which means the message has been delivered to the recipient's blackberry
-a checkmark with an "R" on top of it, which means the recipient has most likely read your message, or at least has opened blackberry messenger

"R" would appear only when you have set "Request Read Receipts" and the recipient has allowed them to be sent.

If you don't have any friends with BBs, then BB Messenger is basically useless to you. I personally use it all the time, and it saves me a ton on SMS charges that I would have had to incur.

You could see if your friends have one of the other messenger services (yahoo, msn, etc).

Oops...am I getting ahead of myself? I am not positive the clients that came on mine BB use data. They don't use sms, do they?

Symbols?

what do these mean?

-little red box next to the contact's name (unavailable?). I thought it might mean unavailable but my contacts told me their devices were set to be available.

-little red box w/ x through it?

That's true for email and SMS but you don't need to do anything to have R show up for PIN and BBM messages.

You can also add via any email address which is associated with the BB. In fact, this is preferred as in my experience there is no "disconnect" when you replace BBs (ie PIN changes)
