Default Calendar Sync problem with DM 4.6 - 4238 error

Please Login to Remove!

I upgraded my ATT 8310 to DM4.6 and OS4.5.0.110 (from 4.2, where everything was doing fine) and I'm running BIS. Love the new features (video cam, html emails, etc). When I tried to synch with Outlook 2003, Memopad, Tasks and Contacts worked fine. Calendar did not. I have turned off all synching except Calendar to focus on the problem, and done the following:

1) deleted any calendar items with attachments and re-synched
2) deleted the Intellisync directory in my ...\Application Data\Research In Motion\Blackberry folder and re-synched
3) uninstalled and reinstalled DM 4.6 and re-synched
4) removed the battery and re-synched

All to no avail.

I modified the iloptcfg.cfg file in the Intellisync folder to generate the PTTrace.log and tif.log files during synching. It appears that the synch successfully reads and processes everything from the handheld. When it tries to read from Outlook, it generates the Intellisync error "Unable to get an Outlook or MS Exchange record..." The tif.log file shows the following after completing the processing on the last handheld Calendar event:
================================================== ========
-------- Ending Sanitizing Target Records phase; starting Load From Source phase

Loading from DateRange 1/1/1900 -- 1/1/1900
ILTIFFeatureSet(0x0, 0x1) rc=0

-------- ilsdk starting assembly of a_record_for_export_to_TIF

-------- ABNORMAL ERROR
-------- ilsdk finished processing a_record_for_export_to_TIF, rc=4238, nRc=4238, action=3
TIFTerminate

-------- ILLOG_close
================================================== ========

Looking at the PTTrace log, synch completes the handheld, but never gets off the ground reading any calendar entries from the Outlook Calendar. Interestingly, it opens with the two lines "Error Load System Failed..." See PTTrace output below:

Default The Solution to Calendar Sync problem

Ok, this one stumped ATT's support desk, so they connected me to RIM. I spent several hours methodically going through various tests with one of the support people. Eventually we turned on WebEx so he (and his colleagues) could see what was going on.

In the end, there was a corrupt calendar entry that prevented the Intellisync software from reading from the Microsoft Outlook Calendar (demonstrated by turning on and reviewing the PTTrace and tif logs). There were no other symptoms of corrupt calendar data (the 4.2 DM synched Calendar just fine and general use of Calendar worked fine).

We exported all the data out of the existing Outlook.pst file into a new one and directed DM 4.6 to look at the new pst file. Everything synched after that.

Anyone with a similar problem should go through the steps I outlined in the previous post first; most problems will be fixed by one of those steps.
