Default Bad placement for the charging port

Please Login to Remove!

I just wanted to see if anyone else thought the placement for the charging port should have been higher like on most of the previous (i only know the 9000) BBs. I was trying to type while it was charging, and it was kind of awkward to hold because the charging port is in the middle of my hand.

I also noticed that the port is very sensitive. While trying to type, I noticed that the battery would pop up and then dissapear. When I took a closer look at what happened when I touched the cord, it simply switched from charging to non-charging.

I am able to duplicate this with the charger... This and the "wiggle" on the screen are making me take this back, to see if I can exchange it for a better built Torch.

Anyone else notice something like this with the port?

Don't like it either. Would have liked to see something like the 9000 so I can use a cradle. But there is one for the 9800 that I will probably get.

Yeah, I'm thinking of getting the torch cradle too. I like the ability for it to be my "clock" where ever I need it too. Posted via BlackBerryForums.com Mobile

The charging port was placed for a reason and RIM assumes most ppl using touch-screen will be holding the phone horizontally with the trackpad on the right side versus the portrait or vertical usage that most of the current BlackBerry phones uses it.

I dunno about that... it just doesnt make sense to not put it higher, regardless of how it's being used. Especially if there is no left conveinence key. And then why make the physical keyboard at all?

I just dont get why it's not where there is nothing to get in anyones way.

The reason it is where it is, is because the rails for the slider are in the way. They can not go higher with the charging port than where it is because the slides get in the way.

I agree.. it is rather annoying, and I would have much rather seen it at the bottom of the device.

It doesn't hurt to showcase the 'screen real estate' but yes ... for all of us who migrated from the 9700 which had a most perfect charging port, it is a big bummer.

Now if I can only find a decent tpu case for it.

Speaking of the Torch cradle, does any one know if the charging port
is in the same location as it is on the Storm or Storm2?

The reason I ask is, Amazon sells the Torch cradle for $29.95.
Amazon also sells the Storm2 cradle for $12.95.

If its the same, I'll splurge for the cheaper one.

Freakin AT&T store wants $49.99 for a Torch cradle.

it is not, AFAIK... I believe the port for both storms was higher on the device, and this one is a new cradle, and port between the 3 devices. I have only seen the S1/S2 a few times thought, so I might be mistaken.

I agree with the pricing though... crazy.

The Storm's Charging port is in the exact location as the Torch's. I grabbed a Storm out of my junk cabinet and compared. Matching them height wise from the top down.. the charging port is identical.

I wouldn't doubt if the Storm cradle will work without a problem on the Torch.

learn something new everyday!

Thanks Tom!

Does that mean I could probably get a storm pod on sale and still use it?

OOoooo.... does the USB port(s) face the same direction? Round side forward towards screen?

On my Storm2, the port round side is facing the back.

No. Opposite directions. Well that's a load of crap on RIM's behalf.

Yup! DAMN! Wonder if you can unscrew the base and turn the port around?

Clever way to make sure you have to buy new equipment for a new device.
