Post Verizon's Unlimited Data and SMS?

Please Login to Remove!

Does anybody know why Verizon's unlimited data plan doesn't include unlimited sms, like tmobile and cingular do? $0.15 each way is an absolute rip when you're already paying a premium for the bberry service. Thanks!

I think you may be referring to the Sidekick plan on Tmobile. That does include unlimited data and unlimited text messaging.

Same with Sprint, sms is not included with unlim data plan. I was able to get 1000 texs for $5 though. Good enough for me.

Not all BB data plans include SMS. SMS isn't data (think about it -- non-data devices can SMS). They're completely unrelated.

If per-use SMS is too pricey then why not add an SMS bundle or use Teleflip (or the SMS gateways for your contacts' carriers)?

One other thing to be aware of is that Verizon's unlimited data plan is not unlimited. They will not let you go over 5GB per month, and there are types of data uses they do not allow.

How could a typical user go over 5BG/month on a BB? It's not like we're downloading WAV or other huge files (?). I'm just not sure that this is an issue for the vast majority of folks.

Not an issue for many people, but it is an issue for many others.
Lots of people use their Blackberry Devices as tethered modems for their laptops. This also contributes to heavy data usage, and could easily go over 5GB a month depending on the user's needs.

Yes, pretty much. Definitely need to read the fine print.
(Apologies if you were being sarcastic and I missed it!)

No, I was not being sarcastic, but knowing how the cell companies work, I can see where the use of sarcasm would be fitting.

But there can be NO FINE PRINT to qualify or add to UNLIMITED DATA, Unlimited data is unlimited data, no exceptions.

please find that fine print. And I will start a class action lawsuit against the cell phone company that has that. I have been involved in drafting legal documents for years, having graduated from Wharton business and Columbia Law (both Magna Cum Laude), I can promise you, they would be in SERIOUS trouble if I, or anyone else, decided to bring an action against them as a result of that.

Here's one example.

Check out Footnote 1 at the bottom:
Connect

Also read the Terms and Conditions using the link at the bottom of that page.
Snippit: "We reserve the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred, and to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is using one of these Data Plans or Features in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice."

You'll find that Verizon has effectively stopped using the word "unlimited" on most, if not all of their literature in an effort to protect themselves.
They were already confronted about this unethical practice months ago. I don't think you're stumbling on anything new.

Ok, well, if they don't say UNLIMITED, then it's all good. Although, I am not very happy with their use of presumption with respect to anyone going over 5gb a month. It seems quite arbitrary to me, and most juries/mediators would
agree. Fact is, they don't won't anyone using that much data. What about UNLIMITED PERSONAL BB DATA? do they try and cap that too?

I believe it is also capped... but again, it's not called "unlimited" anymore.
It's just a 'Blackberry Plan'. (Or Blackberry 10MB Plan) See here:

Yup, verizon seems to have become very careful about using UNLIMITED and they also spell out the "DATA ALLOWANCE" in detail.

What about other carriers?

The verzion thing now proves my point, I did not think their legal department would have been dumb enough to allow a huge error like UNLIMITED (but not)

Honestly, I'm not too sure about other carriers. We also have some Cingular users at my office and I do believe that Cingular still uses the word 'Unlimited' in their plan desriptions.
I don't know whether or not there is a cap, because I never really had a reason to look.
My users don't transfer that much data in a monthly period as to cause any concern.

I am not a lawyer, but I think you have that backwards. If they said unlimited data and did not include qualifications/restrictions and then failed to provide unlimited data then they would have acted in bad faith. If on the other hand there were fine print in the T&C, that you agreed to at the time of purchase, that qualified what they where actually offering then they are off the hook. Or so I would assume.

They are smarter than that. The people that have had their accounts canceled for going over the data limits where not told they went over a capped limit.

Instead the carriers are telling them that they MUST be engaging in one of the un-authorized activities (Streaming content, peer to peer, etc) listed in the T&C to be using that much bandwidth. And that since they MUST be doing one of those not allowed activities their accounts where being canceled.

They never actually say your account is being canceled for going over the limit on your unlimited account.

No, Sidekick has a limit on text messages to 300.

Unlimited BB Data Plan includes free 300 text messages (to Domestic only). SMS is not Data and its a phone GMS system.
