Wirelessly posted (White and Nerdy)

You can if you want. Doesn't really make a difference. If the phone is factory unbranded, it shouldn't make a difference.

Well... not always the case. That is determined actually not by the "non" branding on the external face of the device, but by the Vendor ID on the Help screen...

Type Alt + EACE for the Vendor ID.

The vendor id 302.

Another thing, my factory unlocked unbranded bold 9000 won't upgrade to Latest OS: 9000 5.0.0.661. It says no software update at this time. It looks like RIM won't allow their unbranded bold 9000 upgrade to 5.0 OS, beyond 4.6 OS which they allowed. Have anyone heard this for upgrading the unbranded bold 9000 beyong the 4.6 OS? Please help me! Thanks to all.

The vendor id is #302 - 20:20 Mobile Group in Europe. But then I ended up loading the 4.6 because my unbranded bold 9000 wont allow me to upgrade to 5.0 OS. It looks like RIM won't allow it. I still deleted the vendor file of the 4.6. I can re-do If I did something wrong. I still use the JL_cmdr WIPE before loading the OS. Thank you so much.

Your 5.0.0.661 = 5.0.0.411 (we call it).

Vendor ID 302 is for 20:20 Mobile Group. A UK seller.
So it is not a factory unbranded device. You can't rely on the look of the device to determine if it is vendor-branded or not.

You still must delete the vendor.xml file.

Yes Im with Rogers BIS and im fine. But when i got the fone yesterday, there is no carrier logo on the bottom cover, on the start-up and powered down screen. So this fone is not a true unbranded factory unlocked. I better be careful on what I buy. I cannot even upgrade to 5.0 OS coz it says no software upgrade at this time. Please clarify.

1. Do a back up using BB Desktop Manager
2. Wipe the bold 9000 using the JL_cmdr
3. Using the BB DM again, goto application loader, then update software. (Please note, I've already downloaded the 5.0 OS from blackberry forum.)

It won't load the 5.0 OS, but it allowed me to load the 4.6.0.303 (platform 4.0.0.248)

If this is the case, it's better to get the Rogers branded bold 9000 where I can upgrade to the latest OS 5.0 and beyond. Thxs for your expertise and help. Im a bewbie and does not have the time to hairsplit the tech aspect of an UN-TRUE "unbranded" bold 9000;

Stop.

Use the instructions posted very clearly in the Sticky Thread at the top of this 9000 section.
http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ast-asian.html

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

Do not use Desktop Manager.

JSanders, I'm having the same issue with an AT&T Bold 9000. I followed the instructions in the stickied post (using Loader.exe and not DM) and the OS 5 files just do not show up in the list of things it will install. If I click "Next" it just shows a progress bar that moves for maybe 2 minutes at most, then states it is finished.

Would doing the forced install that someone mentioned earlier be my only option?

It worked! I followed your advise and did not use the desktop manager. Thankyou very much JSanders I am forever grateful to you. But for my info, why did it not load the 5.0 OS when I use the desktop manager? And why do I need to know the vendor ID in relation to deleting the vendor file? So as I understand, if the OS update came from the vendot ID, then I do not delete thje vendor file?

From now on Im going to use your instruction and not use the desktop manager and instead run the Loader, handheld application loader.

Thanks again kindly to you and to the forum.

You are very welcome.

Very likely, because as evidenced here in the forum in another thread, the Desktop Manager will often load another instance of the vendor.xml file in a temporary folder (which is self-deleted when you close Desktop Manager). That's the most common reason. And, that's why we have the very specific instructions listed in each and every "Latest OS" thread in this forum.

I needed to know the exact vendor ID just simply to know that the device was in fact not a "factory non-branded" branded device. It was branded, just not where you could see it. I always delete the vendor.xml file as a rule on installing any OS upgrade. Just habit. A good habit.

Take care, good luck to you.

You are also loading this 5.0.0.411?
You do have a BlackBerry Data Plan on your account?
You have actually installed the OS to your PC?

Yes, all of that. This is my 20th OS install/upgrade.

I finally was able to get it to work by doing the following:
  1. Installed BBSAK (got it from RIMGeeks.com)
  2. Under the Modify CODs tab I clicked the Read System button
  3. Then under the Backup/Restore tab, I clicked Load OS
  4. This brought up the Loader.exe that I had been trying to use that passed 7 times
  5. I followed the prompts and sure enough, it showed OS 5

I completed the install then. No idea why it worked when BBSAK launched the Loader.exe and not when I was browsing through the folders on my harddrive to the location of Loader.exe. But it worked.
