This was done via USB... not too bad. It was done at around 1am, so the wireless traffic usage in the area was low.

When I used Bluetooth to do it (2.0 w/EDR), I ended up getting about 1.5Mbps-ish. The bluetooth transfer rate was the bottle neck at this point. But I think during peak business hours, it wouldn't make much of a difference, as I would get around 1.3-1.5Mbps anyway.

Overall, quite happy with the results.

On a comparitive note, my colleague uses an Option 3.6GT Wireless Air card on his laptop. In our bunker office, the Bold is able to cling onto the 3G signal much better (albeit me leaving it on 3G only mode, but so has he on his air card), and the transfer rates are superior too. This was compared side by side, in the same office.

I'm trying to establish a succesfull connection with my BB 9000. No results jet..

Laptop has installad a standard modem driver
Using *99# as dial in number
Username & Password leaving Blank
Carier: KPN (Netherlands)

Error when connecting:
"Error734: The PPP Link control protocol was terminated"


I tried several option on the blackberry TCP Settings... Anyone an idea?

Same problem when using blootooth link. Laptop <------> BB 9000

I Tried:

Repair and Reset Windows Vista TCP/IP Winsock Catalog Corruption
1) Click on Start button.
2) Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
3) Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
4) Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
5) Restart the computer.

Fixed it !!!

I had to add a special line in Device Manger. [Extra Initialization Commands]

This is the line:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"

My APN in the phone is internet with username and pwd blank

Maybe I can increase the training speed (connected). This is set in device manager at 115200.

The standard modem driver limits the result... It's set to 115.200
I haven't found a HSDPA modem driver so far...

Speedtest on the Blackberry itself results much higer speeds

Wow... And I thought I was doing well. I had done 668 down & 290 up in Austin. Just did a test here in Toronto and got 780 down & 295 up. All over Blue tooth. Obviously I still don't have something set right.

It's actually forbidden to use you telephone as hispeed modem in the netherlands.

There is an FUP for unlimited data acces here. When you're using 10 times more than the average data download you're being blocked.

I've got the bluetooth Modem working via Orange UK and get a pretty reliable 1200kps..speed seems to be limited by the virtual Serial Port speed set to 921kps. Interestingly though upload speed are better than on my home connection!

Would be good to get BT working without the serial port limitation...is there a way?

I have seen speeds of 1.3 Kbps up, 500 down on AT&T with USB and Bluetooth. I currently have my Bold tethered but use it as a backup for now. Once my Sprint card contract expires, I plan to use this as my primary mobile data connection. The sprint EVDO-RevA gives me 2 Mbps and such sustained so I hope that in its prime locations, ATT gives me similar speeds

I am not sure if the modem driver limits the speed. I think it may be other things such as the TCP/IP settings on your laptop.

In EVDO forums, there seems to be general consensus around the importance of tuning the default windows TCP/IP stack to get better performance from tethered modems or PC cards.

Since tethering is a relatively lightly discussed topic on these forums, it may make sense to borrow some of their findings. TCPoptimizer is a program you can download and run.

One more thing: there is a school of thought that phones that double up as tethered modems generally perform slower than their PC card counterparts. Arguably due to the OS overhead, multi-function use, hardware optimization etc. It is conceivable therefore that performance that you are seeing is directly affected by these factors.

What I would like to see is comparative numbers between an AT&T PC or USB 3G card and a tethered Bold. That would be a real test in my opinion as both devices would connect to the same network under the same conditions (i.e. to the same laptop).
