From the BB website:

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.0.0.319 adds support for Location and Voice Notes APIs on BlackBerry 7520.

Developers are able to create applications using BlackBerry JDE v4.0.1 for the BlackBerry wireless platform that include GPS, GIS and spatial information tools. The Location API is exposed via JSR 179, the Java standard for location-based services. In addition, BlackBerry JDE v4.0.1 includes support for new Voice Notes APIs enabling application developers to play and manage voice note files.

For more information about BlackBerry JDE v4.0.1, please refer to the Developers area of BlackBerry.com

So if I am reading the discription right, this upgrade doesn't do anything immediately. But it does allow for future functions once developers write new software for it. I think I will hold off on upgrading my software for now.

Just downloaded it, looks like a much more solid handheld software release. My enterprise activation just completed without any problem

I think it fixes other problems that the 7520 had as the first 4.0 handheld. Jbenchmark2 no longer errors out for example. I don't know what real world changes are there though.

I heard there are a LOT of bug fixes:
- Improved Bluetooth support
- Improved stability
- Slightly better performance
- GPS navigation API support
- Better MIDP 2.0 support (i.e. JBenchmark2 works better now)
- Password Keeper

Has anyone tried the "BlackBerry-As-Modem" with a Nextel upgraded to this new OS?

Please bear with me since this is my first OS upgrade for a Blackberry.. I downloaded the 319 update and the file i got does say 319 in the name, but when I did the upgrade it only showed 249 in the about screen.

The actual filename is:

7520M_PBr4.0.0_rel319_PL1.4.0.40_A4.0.0.249-Nextel.exe

So it has 319 and 249 in the name. Is 319 the release # of the package and 249 the release of the OS?

That's correct.
4.0.0.319 is the package version
4.0.0.249 is the apps version

From my blog - In addition to an HTML browser (separate icon) and password keeper (also sep icon), Here's the actual applications that are being updated:

Blackberry 4.0 system software

Blackberry 4.0 core applications

Blackberry API library

Blackberry Attachment Service

Blackberry Certificate Key Store Browser Library

Blackberry Crypto 1 library

Blackberry Crypto 2 library

Blackberry ECMAScript library

Blackberry Key store browser library

Blackberry XML library

Brickbreaker

Browser

Crypto Applciations API library

French Language support

Help

MemoPad

Spanish Language support

Tasks

Note: Installation will erase all applications and stored data (but re-inputs them back to your BB). I takes about 5 full minutes for the handheld to be upgraded.

I did the upgrade too, but see no additional browser icon... is this just for BES customers because I use BWC?

I'm on BWC and I have the icon. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but when installing the OS in app loader, the password keeper and a Dood (?) was unchked by default. I ensured all boxes were checked off so everything was installed.

also, my radio was off for quite a while after installation. it wasn't until I got radio connection back that the browser icon showed up.

Question....

Does this new OS finally provide two-way SMS texting on Nextel BlackBerries?

I did the upgrade...took the battery out of the BB for a minute and then replaced it. Once the BB rebooted, the only thing I see different is a Password Keeper icon. No other icons have appeared at all.

What am I doing wrong?

The API updates are mainly of interest to computer programmers -- it's not an application. API = "Application Programming Interface"
