OS Memory Usage, Restoring Messages

1. I'm using OS 6 on the BlackBerry Bold 9700. When I restart my phone, if I look under Memory Usage, the BlackBerry OS consumes about 147 MB. As the days go by, depending on what applications I use, the OS can grow in size up to 198 MB. Is it normal for memory usage of the OS itself to increase by that degree as the days go by? In the event that it is not normal, I'll look at the 12 suspect applications I use for possible memory leaks...
2. The reason I'm asking is that I recently experienced a low memory event on my handheld in which Free Memory dropped to 0.0 KB and I lost a slew of email messages. I have an old backup I made a few months ago. If I do a selective restore and choose only email messages, will that overwrite any messages I currently have on my phone (for the same inbox) or will it add any messages that are missing on the handheld? I'm guessing it's the former... Are there any applications out there to better handle restoring messages from a backup (e.g. restore by message date, merge instead of overwrite, etc.)?
3. Are there any applications that display Free Memory directly on the desktop?
4. I am famiilar with the options of downgrading or shrinking the OS, what about simply increasing the memory on the phone, is that possible?
Thanks a bunch!
