Default Trackball Scroll Problem (temporarily)

Please Login to Remove!

My trackball wouldn't roll down last night. But no problems maneuvering up, right or left.

Tried it again today miorning - same problem.

So i popped my battery & the trackball still wouldn't roll down.

It's been about 2 hours now... and now it's scrolling freely again.

anyone else come across this problem? Or know why this happens?

I've had that problem a few times. My theory is that stuff gets stuck on the ball, and after rolling the ball for a while, it eventually comes out and lets it freely spin again.

hmm.. thats a valid theory.

i wonder if RIM expects users to perform regular cleaning of the trackball?

My wife's Pearl had that issue and we ended up having to do a warranty replacement. I think it's a known problem. There are several threads already about how to clean the trackball. I would suggest using a can of compressed air once a week to blow out whatever may have collected there.

If it does become a problem, this could be a good service (side gig) for someone to offer to those who are scared to take their phone apart, if this pearl craze takes off to the masses. But then again if they have this much of a problem, the pearl design may go away. Eh! who knows.

For cleaning, I would recommend a device I have for my cameras. Its a bulb that you squeeze and when released it sucks air. Better than blowing the dust into the BB.

Giottos Rocket Air Blower and Q Ball

If this happens again, try pushing the trackball as far down and it can go and roll in one direction. I think it is caused by dust getting trapped between the trackball and the rollers. Pushing it down should make the trackball grip the dirt better and rolling it in one direction should bring out.

that's a funky looking apparatus

If the problem persists, I may just purchase it!

The best way I found to fix trackball problem is turn the pearl up-side-down, and roll the ball lightly many times in every direction..
