I think part of it is that the UAE stuff has made this a high-profile political issue. Politicians are now saying, "We should have this too! In case of... you know, emergencies and stuff."

However, I think the bigger problem is that all these countries recently discovered that some other countries (US, UK, Canada, etc.) can see BlackBerry traffic, and have been able to see it for who knows how long. And they're ticked that such an ability exists but that they don't have it.

In a way, I get it - if you are Germany or Saudi Arabia, and members of your government or other persons of interest within your borders use BlackBerry devices for either work or play, it is theoretically possible for other countries to monitor the content of those messages while you are unable to do the same. It may not work that way in fact, but how could any government be sure?

In short, I think everyone left the whole BB encryption thing alone while they believed that everyone else was equally blind. Now everyone wants in.

RIM can't decrypt BES traffic.

Do the BIS servers reside at the carrier's? If so, then RIM can't decrypt those either.

small comment on this as everyone give his opinion and his experience in living in UAE which is a dream of person in this world for at least a visit to Dubai ...

the funniest part is you guys in US - UK and Canada : Did u bother yourself asking why your country is not asking for access to your phones ?? . Do you really believe that your BB is secured and the data is encrypted .. ??? .

for your information : your country already has what other countries are requesting from RIM at the moment ,,, USA - UK - Canada has a full access to the RIM encrypted Data servers and they can read - trace everything they feel it's required to keep the country safe ...

so I believe what my country as well as other countries are asking from RIM is fear and reasonable ,

logically none of the Telecom operators has enough employees and time to read every single BBM or email sent to every BB user ...

the funniest part is RIM keeps refusing and declining to support the countries to provide access , but which it become serious matter ,, they act like someone else ..

Saudi Arabia received the access to all the blackberry data in less than 30 minutes after they only stopped the BBM service :D ..

and the same story will be repeated with UAE case ...

I personally hope to keep my BB service working in UAE ,, i don't care the government reads my emails and reads my BBM chats as long as it keeps me safe ...

No, they do not. You have no clue what you're speaking of.

Don't make this a US/UK/Canada vs. UAE/Saudi argument, because it isn't.

All spys should be publicly hung regardless of who they work for if caught.

This allows for diversity which seems to be important nowadays.

ehssan_alkhiyami is partially right. While the US, UK, and Canadian governments may not have the encryption keys that he speaks of; as a US citizen, I personally have them. But don't tell anyone.

So does that mean that you know what groceries my wife asked me to grab on the way home?

Yes, but I didn't have to even use the decryption keys, that email was sent via BIS without any SSL ports.

Darn, I was all geared up to talk rule of law and due process and all that.

But, I am happy my government is exceptionally good at snooping on criminals when it has probable cause, and on the enemy any damn time it wants; and that it cannot go snooping in my stuff at will just to make sure I'm not doing anything it disapproves of, at least not do it and use it in court against me, that is.

Followed a link on twitter to Security researcher warns on UAE BlackBerry replacements - Computerworld.

Maybe there's something to it, maybe not. To me the point is that nobody -- well, practically nobody -- is going to say, "No, that's preposterous. No way that could be going on. Don't worry about it."

Well , both operators ( du - Etisalat ) started a lot of new offers as an alternative solutions of blackberry , the article might be correct because Etisalat tried once before to monitor the blackberry by pushing a spy software but they failed ... so they have this habit :D

Looks like the government have taken the decision to suspend all blackberry services on 11th October what so ever .. but everyone has a feeling that it will be resumed after short time ..
