Of course, this is the same UAE which last fall installed the snooping software on customer's devices and got caught.
So, who can't trust whom?

I feel like such a rebel using a blackberry. I think I'll turn the power up on my content protection just because I can.

More news - as of October 11th they are suspending all BlackBerry services:
UAE to block BlackBerry services on security fears - Yahoo! News
There are also rumors that Saudi Arabia has already started blocking BB services as of today (per BGR).

Gee, could it be because the BB encrypts data and the idea people want to restrict the free flow of information. The story comments seem to indicate a move to even more restrictions on it people.
it's easy to say it's for security......right!!

It couldn't possibly be about censorship. Nope. No chance of that.

Saudi Arabia also.
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010...y.html?_r=1&hp
Perhaps our friends there could complain about this to their elected officials.
Oh, wait...
"UAE took a bolder step than Saudi Arabia whereas Saudi Arabia is only banning one, the Messenger," said board member Abdulrahman Mazi, speaking on the Arabic language channel.
"I hope this is only a kind of pressure on (Blackberry maker) Research In Motion to take steps to provide information when needed."

The governments want RIM (the maker of the BlackBerry) to turn over the decryption keys or install proxy servers so the transmitted data is available.
I *hope* RIM does not give in to government controls.

Ditto that, NJBlackBerry.
What I would reply to onewinsome belongs in the senstive topics forum, so I'll just shut up. But good luck, onewinsome.

Used to live and work in the UAE. Glad I'm out of that oppressive state. You wouldn't believe how blatant and widespread are the anti-American and anti-Jewish views are. The Emiratis are a proud bunch, while I really failed to understand what they are so proud of.

SO who do we trust?
Is there a risk from installing phone software from certain providers (Saudi Arabia)(UAE)(India)(China)(built in holes)?
How secure are US-based Blackberry services? (From USGov, etc.)
Small business based BES Express more secure than BIS?
Does RIM retain messages or remnants to/from BES services?

My company has a handful of users who will be affected by this decision, should it actually happen. One of them sent me this link which provides an interesting timeline of events in that region:
gulfnews : Timeline: BlackBerry services in the UAE
I'd love to know what happened between July 27 and August 1 to make the TRA change their minds.

UAE Bypass - BES workaround?
I seem to remember that it would be possible to setup a BB to 'bypass' the RIM NOC, and connect direct to the BES, but I can't seem to find this now? We looked at it when NTP was looming before. Am I crazy, or does anyone know about this option? Our carrier had told us about it.
It seems that they will block the traffic to the RIM NOC, but traffic to a BES at a random location would likely be able to go through I would think?

Those residents of the UAE and Saudi Arabia should protest to their governments.
It is not a BlackBerry problem, but a repressive government problem.
Those thinking that RIM/BlackBerry should "compromise" have no idea what they're speaking of.

Having visited the Middle East I can tell you the people are absolutely wonderful. In Iran, as an American, I was routinely welcomed and invited to homes for dinner on many occasions. The governments of the Middle East MUST NOT enjoy economic relations with America if they do not embrace the notions of basic human rights and equitable treatment.
Sadly, both conservative (Bush) and liberal regimes in Washington (Obama) have literally kissed Saudi royals. America pours millions into Saudi coffers, some of which is used to oppress its citizens and fund radical Islamic endeavors. America treats its dogs better than the Saudi government treats its people. Women are treated like cattle and yet still Saudi officials get couch time in the oval office. Washington has touted its policy of "democracy exportation" to Iraq and sends its American soldiers shed their blood and give their lives in support of this endeavor, while American "allies" next door operate as royal dictators. Evidently money is more important to American politicians than our constitutional values.
G-Talk for Blackberry folks and keep the lines of communication open with our friends abroad during this time of persecution. Write your congressman/woman and let them know freedom is more important than oil.
