Default time automatically change with traveling to different time zone?

Please Login to Remove!

my ceo said on his regular phone..it automatically change the time when ever he travel between different time zone. it somehow sync the current time over the air. but on his blackberry it doesnt do it.

i dont believe blackberry has this feature? i went into date/time setting and it has "blackberry" on date/time source. it also have "off" and "network"...what are the difference between all those setting?

can someone confirm if the blackberry can sync time when traveling between different time zone?

btw...we are using bis.

While ordinary cell phones will change with the time zones, when using a BlackBerry you need to go to Options>Time/Date and pick your time zone. The BlackBerry will then set the time accordingly.

One has nothing to do with the other.
Getting time from the network is typically in GMT time.... from Blackberry and/or any other device.
It's up to the Time Zone setting on the device to actually display the correct time for whatever geographical area you're in.

Blackberry Devices don't automatically adjust the Time Zone based on geography. Other devices may, but the Blackberry doesn't.

I don't see why you need to get all bent out of shape about it.
It's just the way it is.

Also if you change the time zone on a BB, it will mess up your calender since it also have a timezone setting in the appointments...

Vincent, settle down a bit. I don't care for your demanding style as well as word choice here. No need to belittle other users as well, less you find yourself on a short vacation from the site.

You set your own Time Zone on the BB, and Network settings will keep your time updated correctly. It will not update Time Zones, and I am glad it does not, because as stated, your calendar and appointments would get all out of whack.

Ugh.
If you're going to try to insult me... at least spell 'Einstein' properly. I have no idea who or what enstein is.

If you expect me to answer your question at this point, you'll be waiting for quite some time.

Have a good one, Vinny.

I suspect RIM included those settings simply to piss you off.
Looks like they're working as planned to me.

The "why" doesn't matter. The "what for" does.

Whoa, whoa, whoa....(A) changing the time zone only messes up the calendar if you don't take into account time zones when setting the time on entries. (B) Set appointments according to the time zone where the appointment occurs, and recognize the appointment time is according to the time displayed on the BB. (C) If you sync with a PC (you are on BIS) remeber to change the time zone back before syncing.

Ali, that is the correct way to set your "out of time-zone" appoinments, I know I do now (I figured that out the first time my flights back home were out of whack). Of course the OP never asked this question, he was more concerned with bashing users here and RIM than learning how to use the BB.

Here is an explanation:

BlackBerry - Synchronizes the time with the Research In Motion BlackBerry Infrastructure and not the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Network - Synchronizes the time with your service provider's network time.

Off - Does not synchronize the date or time.

Now I would recommend in the future, you ask nicely and not insult people here.

Please note that those settings are simply a form date/time synchronization that sets a source for DATE and TIME (not TIME ZONE).

Did RIM screw this up? In short, no. It's based on Microsoft's implementation of calendaring which is based on UTC time and time zone offset together rather than separately. In an ideal world, if everything was local, then UTC time would be the source calendaring and it would be altered (in view only) based on your time zone offset of whatever device you were on. Unfortunately that's not how Microsoft designed it and not how RIM can implement it.

You'll find much more 'frustration' (or whatever little temper-tantrum you were having) from the Windows Mobile crowd configured for ActiveSync and automatic time zone adjustment. For them, they atleast have an option. I'm not sure if RIM will ever add in the option (for the non-BES, non-IntelliSync user), but I think most of us are satisfied without it.

The blackberry asking timezone is annoying, but I can deal with it. Whats even funnier is that every GPS unit I've ever owned (Garmin, TomTom, Magellan) etc... the first thing you need to tell it when you turn it on is what time zone I'm in.

What are you asking me for???? YOU are the GPS!

heheh

Whenever I change time zones I just go to Options | Date/Time and change Time to the current time.

That way messages, appts etc. display and sync correctly.

It's really no big deal.
