Applications not working on Blackberry Bold
Please Login to Remove!
I am a Blackberry Bold user from the Orange UK. I tried to install tha Blackberry Maps and the Windows Live Messenger on the device but it says that it doesn't support it. When I tried the same with the Yahoo messenger, everything run smoothly. Why is that? Why most of the applications don't even work yet?

I've notced a few things as well...My personal favorite POYNT doesnt work :(
I've also noticed that most of my games from the curve don't "stretch to fit" the new Bold screen, so they look tiny and are off to one side of the screen (hard to play)

I think its a case that Orange prevent us from using BB maps and perhaps other applications rather than them not working with the Bold yet. I know certain carriers restrict BB maps so as to encourage the use of their own sat nav software which they charge for!

I still can't get BB maps to load map data on my Rogers Bold. The download from blackberrymcom/maps states it doesn't support OS's newer than 4.2.
This is not a big deal since google maps works fine.

Google maps is free. Both maps applications use data from your allowance.

I imagine that until a lot of these apps are re-written for the new screen resolution they're not going to be compatible. Growing pains.

Yahoo Go didn't transfer over to the bold. Also a lot of the other programs I bought such as the bubble bubble game and a few other games don't seem to work. I hope they will provide a free upgrade if you purchased the game.

Best thing for folks to do is to contact the software vendors individually and ask them if it is compatible with this OS and furthermore, have they accounted for the new resolution.
This isn't a RIM thing necessarily unless RIM failed to supply developers with a Bold OS ROM to run and debug in the simulator. Although I don't see the 4.5 or 4.6 OS ROMs available from RIM's dev site, perhaps they were made available via other channels (i.e. a premium dev subscription of some sort).
For example, I did ask the developers of PocketDay about 4.6 and they indicated their new version will support it.

However, did they specifically understand that your question was geared towards the higher resolution display, not just the OS version?

I noticed weathereye from weathernetwork is not functioning properly. You can install the program, and it will tell you the temperature when you scroll to the icon, but once you load up the program and try reading additional information like short term / long term forecasts, it displays a loading screen, then when that is finished it doesn't display any data.

Specifically, maybe not but the words he used were"...this is the Bold version as well..."
I will follow up with him but I suspect that the window is not fixed and will adapt to whatever dimensions are available. Which, for PocketDay, would be a good thing in a 480x320 world.

Found out the problem...
It seems that BB Maps can't use a wifi connection for data (but Google maps can?). Once I turned off wifi, BB Maps was able to load map data via the cellular 3G connection.

BlackBerry Maps is preinstalled on Rogers BlackBerry Bold
BlackBerry Maps works fine on my Rogers BlackBerry Bold.
Works fine over 3G
Works fine over WiFi
You have to have functioning email (i.e. BlackBerry service), then make sure that you've rebooted your BlackBerry. It seems to refuse to work with an unactivated BlackBerry Bold though not 110% sure. Once it's set up, it works pretty great and fast.
Rogers 3G has been having some hiccups lately, sometimes I find turning off-then-on the 3G radio helps. Had to do that once already today.

Telenav v5.1 appears to work but doesn't currently use the full video resolution and displays only in the top left corner of the screen. After checking the telenav website, it doesn't list the Bold as being officially supported yet both as a device and by Rogers Wireless.
EDIT: Telenav does appear to be working as normal but the opening screen is not at full resolution. Functionally though, it still works as expected.

Thanks. I feel like we are back in the days when high resolution Palm devices were introduced... it took forever for developers to update their software to take advantage of the new screen resolution.

Texas Hold'em 2 for the Curve is a little off in screen resolution on the Bold (as was the Pearl version on the Curve) but it still works fine. It just needs a new background image that is the proper resolution. Same case with Pearl version on Curve.
