Indian Bold 9700 – 3G support in USA?
Please Login to Remove!
Hi,
I bought a Bold 9700 in India. Got it from the official store and everything, so it's an Indian version.
If I take this to the US, will it work on the 3G networks there? ATT? Verizon?
The 9700 has the following information below the battery cover:
ETA- 255/2009/WRLO
PRD 17739 -065
IC:2503A-RCM70UW
FCC ID: L6ARCM70UW
Made in Hungary 2

I have used 3G bold with indian sim card in singapore - no problems.
You should check with your indian service provider which networks in the US they have a tie-up with.

Kind of hard to say, from what I've read, there are two versions... both with UMTS on the 2100 frequency, but one with 1900/850 (that will work with AT&T), and the other with 1700/900 (that will work with T-Mobile).
Even the BlackBerry India site ( BlackBerry - Bold 9700 Specs – Blackberry Bold Specifications) shows two versions.

Yeah, that's the problem, I can't tell which one mine is. Any way of finding out from the box or the serial number or something like that?

Just to clarify, I'm not looking to use my Airtel (India) number in the US. I'll get a SIM card there from one of the providers, but I'd like to know which one my berry supports.

How can you tell?
Options - about.
I believe its if it has a line "bands 1, 4, 8" it works on the t-mobile 3G frequency.
If that lines has different numbers, or isnt there at all; it works on at&T, rogers etc 3G frequency.

It will not work on Verizon for sure since the device is GSM and Verizon is a CDMA network - a totally different technology.
And in addition to having the correct frequencies, it must be unlocked.

Ah great. It has bands 1,2,5,6, so ATT should be fine. And yes, it's unlocked. In India, operator locked phones are rare.. only the iPhone comes locked. 99% of phones here are unlocked (with the exception of the CDMA providers, of course, but GSM is the dominant standard).
Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated.

I just found this thread and I am glad I got an AT&T Bold 2 then. I got one from Thailand before it had launched in India and was scared it won't work on the Indian 3G bands if they were different. But if the one they are selling in India also has the 1,2,5,6 which my phone has, I think I should be safe.
And yes, I do understand 3G hasn't been launched as yet :P
