Please Login to Remove!

Multiple issues with
BB 8520 Curve
EDGE, Wi-Fi
v5.0.0.900 (Bundle 1626, Platform 5.2.0.96)
  1. Won't connect to internet
  2. Installed new SIM card to solve the problem
  3. Will not connect to internet intermittently, even in Wi-Fi zone
  4. used to say EDGE, now says UMA (is that the problem?)
  5. Deleted the Gmail App and now using built in message app
  6. Battery is draining super fast (w/in hours)
  7. "Open" apps=BBmesgr, call log, home screen, Browser, and Messages

What's the deal? Also experiencing random reboots. So frustrating!

Please update your profile as it says you have a 7100.

An 8520 will not work on Verizon. The 8520 is a GSM device and Verizon is CDMA. What carrier are you really using?

If you are really on a GSM network, how long has this been happening?

What did you do to the device just before this happened? Did you drop it or get it wet? Load an app or theme?

Do you have a Blackberry data plan activated on the account?

Thanks for replying, Dubdub.

What carrier are you really using? T-Mobile
If you are really on a GSM network, how long has this been happening? I don't know what a GSM network is.
What did you do to the device just before this happened? Did you drop it or get it wet? Load an app or theme? Nothing. I have not dropped it or gotten it wet. The rep @ T-Mobile said the problem (intermittent internet accessibility) was due to an outdated SIM card, so he installed a new one.
Do you have a Blackberry data plan activated on the account? Yes, I do.

I hope that these answers will help someone to diagnose the problem.

Is this device new to you or has it worked properly in the past?

NJBB,

I have had this device for at least three years. Connecting to the internet has become an increasingly frequent problem, but did not occur at all for probably the first year and a half I had the BB.

Only possible suggestion would be to upgrade to the latest handheld operations system.

NJBB,

Thank you. I will try that. Could that have caused the battery drain?

Who knows. It could also be a bad battery. The 8520 was released by T-Mobile in August, 2009 (2+ years ago) and if it is the original battery it may be going bad.

Bad batteries can cause a bunch of problems you wouldn't normally associate with batteries. If you have dropped your BB or gotten it wet you could also see problems like this as hardware gets progressively worse.

Downloaded the latest OS per NJBB's advice. Will hope for the best. Device screen still reads UMA instead of EDGE, but not having trouble connecting to the 'net yet.

UMA means that you are getting voice over WiFi. It has nothing to do with EDGE.

Thank you, NJBB, for the UMA info. It's been a few hours and the battery is still at full capacity. One problem is relieved at least.
