Is there a relatively easy way to encrypt the traffic, short of using outlook (with the redirector) or a BES?

Not really.

PGP encryption might be a good way to go though since that is used for end to end encryption for consumers.

it is encrypted but not to the extent of BES and not all integrations are encrypted the same:

The BlackBerry Internet Service encrypts email messages that it receives using SSL when it
is supported by the external email server (POP over SSL, IMAP over SSL, or Microsoft®
Outlook® Web Access). External email servers use a standard TCP connection if an SSL
connection is not supported.

Does the browser supports end-to-end encryption, using SSL?
