Hi Guys,

I myself have never owned a BB so I'm a complete noob when it comes to how they work. I lost my friends BB whilst on holiday and am completely gutted, not because of the phone but because of they're BBM contacts. They never backed up their BBM contacts manually which is the first thing that came up on Google searches. Is there anyway their BBM activity is monitored by the Carrier or BB or even backed up OTA to BB?? Anyway to trace the contacts or chat history?? Any postive suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I've already bought them a new BB but I know its the BBM contacts that they miss the most.

Wow, you are a good friend!

AFAIK, there is no way to get back BBM contacts, unless your friend did a backup (which is a moot point now) or with BlackBerry protect.

Although.....when he first set up BBM, he may have been asked to do a wireless backup (linked to his email account) and he may be able to get them back that way. Not really sure.

This would be the best bet. On your friend's new BB have them go into BBM and go into Options, then select restore and put in their email address. If they selected this option it should restore their contacts. This is assuming that they backed it up with their email address, of course.

That's entirely possible... and when he once again sets up his BBM on the new device AND if the email account on his former (now lost) device is also on the new device, it should be recognized and ask if you want to use the email account to again wirelessly backup your BBM contacts. Hence, he could also press Restore (in BBM > Options) and restore, if there is anything there.

Going forward though, your friend should make sure that when they back up, they should check the box that says [Auto Save contact list changes], that way never caught flat-footed again.
