BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.2.353 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.2.2.353
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.2.2.196
Software Platform: 3.0.0.81
File name: 8830EFS_PBr4.2.2_rel353_PL3.0.0.81_A4.2.2.196_Bell_Mobility.exe
File size: 88.83MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Instructions for installing to ANY CARRIER's 8830:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader
4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device. Previous OS https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=02A32AD2669E6FE298E607FE7CC0E1A0

I dont think these a reall updates but only particular for the provider service, but i could be wrong.

Well it installed perfect and put in all my 3rd apps no problem.
But i had some data isues and audio isues,
This is after i redid service books and more.
I always have 1XEV Never a data freeze or drop, but after the upgrade i got
1xev and NO data working till i turned the radio on and off, Next i had all sudden while on the fone with good signal a volume drop so low i could not hear the other person unless i restarted the dailing again, dont know if this is from the upgrade or conflict with other 3rd party software.

I did revert back to the old telus Firmware 76 my data dropped and froze to many times, never had that before.

I gave this firmware a whirl (over the most recent VZW edition) and have decided to stick with it. I went from 17MB free to 21mb upon install and am noticing the same longer battery life as reported elsewhere. My service books automatically re-pushed themselves. I have had no issues whatsoever.

Can you go back to an earlier version of software if this version ends causing problems?

Updated my Bell 8830 last week and I also observed the same slight memory increase (8MB free to 10MB free in my case) and definately noticed a big improvement in battery life. Prior to this upgrade I would be lucky to get through to the end of the day without needing to re-charge but now it looks like I can get through 1.5 days (2+ days if I make no phone calls).

More importantly, it looks like the memory leak has been fixed (I can see memory is reclaimed when I delete things). (y)

Prior to upgrading to this version my next appointments showed up under calendar. Now there is nothing there. Did some setting get changed or is this something that poped up with this version? I've only had my BB for less than a week so I'm not really sure how battery life and memory were affected by this version. TIA.

Connect to desktop manager, select backup then advanced options and delete your calendar and tasks. Then resync with Outlook and you will see them on your Today screen again. Do a backup first but I've never lost data doing this before.

Has anyone else noticed 413 errors with this new build?

I've got all 8830's at the moment. Some now on this new build and other still on the 176 last build.

On the new 196 build if I go to Direct Energy - Electricity & Natural Gas Prices, Protection Plans, Furnaces & Central Air Conditioning Sales Repairs & Maintenance, Home Improvements (http://www.directenergy.com) I get a 413 error of "Request Entity Too Large". I've done a little research on this but found nothing that relates to this version of the 8830 software.

But yet on the 176 build I can get to that website without issues?

Any ideas? I thought maybe BES server configuration but not sure. Seems odd that one build can get to that website yet the new load cant.

Comments?

Hmm, I am not sure. If I had to guess it may have something to do with a setting on BES. All I can tell you is that I've upgraded four 8830's with the .196 code and none of them work (for this website anyway, for everything else it seems fine). The remaining three 8830's are still on the .176 build and they work without fail to the website I indicated in my last mail.

I looked at every setting I could find on BES and could not find anything when it comes to HTML size or limits.

Do we have to get the latest version of desktop manager or can the earlier version work? I have heard there are no major differences except for a facelift anyways....

Any version of Desktop Manager will work just fine. I still use DM 4.2 SP2 with no issues.

I am having the same issues with no data. My signal is showing 1x no EV or ev.
Going to wipe then uninstall all of my 8830 o/s on desktop manager. Try again. May even also do a *228 option 1 spl prog.

What I have done.
1. Uninstall everything. Desktop Manager and Device O/S.
2. Reinstall everything. Desktop Manager 4.3 latest. This device O/S.
3. Delete the vendor.xml file.
4. JL_Cmder wipe. Got the expected 507 error.
6. Reconnected to Desktop Manager.
7. Load this device software.
8. Powered up phone. Turnned on Wireless.
9. Only showing 1x.
10. Service Status showing no data signal.
11. HRT also showing no routing tables.

Next step downgrade to 4.2.2.176

I also called Verizon to make sure it has the Blackberry unlimited data plan twice. Once at 10am and again at 2pm. Each time I called I got a different support rep. They both confirmed I had a data plan.

Yes I have Data Services enabled. I even switched from Global to 1XEV.
Now just to note that when I did a battery pull this time I did notice my signal quickly switched from 1x to 1xev then back to 1x. If you blinked you would have missed it.

For now I will obviously be going back to 4.2.2.176. Unable to do further testing since this is my bosses BB and he needs it tonight.

I wish I could help out more.

Does this 4.2.2.353 / 4.2.2.196 enable the GPS on Verizon?

So far [with 176] it's disabled and only available with VZ Navigator + $10/mo. I want to use the GPS with other 3rd party SW - any advice?

John Clark

Welcome to the forums.

There is NO way to enable the GPS without paying the $10/ month and have VZ enable VZ Navigator.

gershon
04-20-2008, 09:35 AM
Various posts indicate the same physical device, with the same OS version has the GPS enabled with other carriers. If that's true it means this functionality is a property of the device, not of the carrier. Then why is there "NO way" to also enable it with Verizon?

John Clark
04-20-2008, 10:52 AM
Because it's disabled on the hardware level based on the vendor coding of the device. It's just not possible. It's been tried and tried.

I would like to warn users of this O/S. This is NOT a result of my issue above, because that particular BB was defective.

I have tried to load this os on 3 8830's. 2 have failed, 1 successful.

The 2 that failed went into the repeating boot sequence, never starting up just a black screen and the red led or "red light of comatose". I had to revert to the current Verizon O/S to get them working again.

FYI..

TECK
04-22-2008, 08:34 PM
To make sure there are no problems, I fully charged the 8830 before the upgrade.
I had the original A4.2.2.123 software on my phone, being upgraded to A4.2.2.196 version. I used the desktop software 4.3 version. Because Bell Mobility is my carrier, I did not delete the vendor.xml file.

The upgrade went very smoothly. While 3 quarter of the upgrade complete, it seemed that everything stalled, but if you are patient and do not touch your phone, it goes through without problems. The hole process takes about 30-35min.

The biggest improvement is the battery life. I can leave the phone open the hole weekend, while I use it only for emails and it still has one quarter of the bar unused for Monday morning calls. Really impressed, before I used to charge the phone every day.

If you are on a BES you will have to enterprise activate again. If you're just using BIS then you don't need to do that.

John Clark

I would just plug your BB back in and make sure all unnecessary apps are removed from your BB. You may have over looked some. Lost call logs and emails are not an OS specific event. Also, check out my Optimize post in my signature.
