Default Can I i trust blackberry support! Upgrade Paths

Please Login to Remove!

Hi and thanks in advance for any assistance given!

I have a BES 3.6.7.12 Server running 12 users without a problem!

However we want to upgrade to 4.1.5 fairly soon!

I have configured a few BES Servers but i have never been the one to upgrade them to a completely new version. Ie: v3 to v4. I have spoken to Blackberry and read their upgrade documentation and everyone says that if i have the latest service packs for 3.6 I can just install the upgrade not a problem!

"I HAVE HEARD THIS B4";

I decided to do a bit of googling on the topic and have found a very mixed reaction to this. Some people say it worked fine, others it was a nightmare!

I am assuming as Blackberry dont seem to care about letting us know what version we are running that i am running version 3.6 (SP7) (12 Users).

If anyone can give me some advice as to how theirs went or any steps you think i should take to ensure that this runs nice and smoothly.

Thanks Again!

Wirelessly posted (8310)

Is this exchange, domino or groupwise environment?

BES 3.6.7 is fine to upgrade to 4.0 and 4.1. As long as you back up the DB you are fine.

It's only 12 users so the chances of you having a nightmare upgrade is pretty rare.

Worst case scenario:

Upgrade goes bad and you install BES 4.1.5 fresh and activate the users anew.

Again, back up the DB and and run the installer inplace. You should be fine, if you do have an issue you got BBF to turn too

Yeah but the upgrade from 3.6 to 4.0 or was it 4.0 to 4.1 (I forget now) was a chargeable upgrade. You need to have the right version of 4.1.5 in order to be able to upgrade.

Perhaps rim have now dropped that requirement, and assume everyone is on 4.1

All is well that ends well!

Ok so I updated my software and it worked no worries!

Did have a few issues with HDD Space but fixed that up and we were back on our way.

Got up this morning happy my blackberry was working then it along with my entire setup started having troubles. I cant stress enough that I dont think this was BB related but you would not believe it but all my licensing CAL's had disappeared from my server, so as you can imagine this morning was total chaos!

However BB was sweet / upgrade went smoothly / surprise surprise M$ software caused unrelated issues!

Thanks for you assistance I will be using these forums again!

When I used to do support, it would be the same situation. Everyone would think it is the BES that is causing issues, when majority of the time it is Windows Server OS or Exchange which is causing the problems to occur. (ie - message delays, services stopping, permissions revoked)...
