I talked to Alltel tech and they said that the 8130 doesnt receive those type. (I hate it when the sales clerks dont know as much as they think they do)

Is the newer software allowing MMS texts?

Another question I have, is Alltel tech also told me that no longer can most cell manufacturers make phones that you can put your own music and make it a custom ringtone per caller. I noticed that on my 8130 I can, but my wifes phone (Samsung Muse) will not allow it and most of Alltels models will not allow it any longer, he said that the manufacturers are making you BUY ringtones now. Are you still able to do custom ringtones in the newer version?

Thanks!
The mms issue is RIM's MMS software not working with Alltel's MMS system. Several fixes have been released by RIM to Alltel for testing and so far they've been failing the testing process. The problem is being addressed, and will be sent out automatically to us Alltel BB users as an OTA service packet. This is not something that we can update or fix...gotta wait on Alltel. The customer reps have no idea what they're talking about 99% of the time.

As for the ringtone issue...recently several of my family members are no longer able to bluetooth sound files, or set certain sound files as ring tones. I *think* Alltel has been sending out updates to lock up certain things on those phones. I haven't noticed anything on my BB, yet.

Read my last post, about 3 posts up...I explain the changes/differences I've noticed with the new OS. You and I have the same phone and service, so you should have the same experience I did...for the most part. Be sure to follow the steps in the first post!!!

Generally, the device will run a little slow at first and then speed up as programs are loaded into memory.

It turns out that there might have actually been a downside to this OS, at least for my Alltel 8130.

Ever since the upgrade...my data hasn't been transferring like it normally does. I average 3 bars in 1X around my house, and can access any web app or website whenever I wanted to. Now nothing wants to connect half the time I try, which started happening after the upgrade.

I have done a wipe/re-install since the 4.5 install, due to another problem I was having(accidentally deleted important modules), and this issue is still present. I even had my service books resent.

The last call I made to Alltel, she had me hit send>menu key>options>general settings...and look for "active number", which doesn't exist on that menu for me. The first thing she asked after I told her that was "Did you download a more recent OS that we aren't yet offering? If so...that's why".

How do I downgrade my OS? I still have the setup file for the last working OS I used, which was the last one posted before 4.5.

Default Geotagging

Hey did anyone else notice that GeoTagging is available under the camera options? I thought it was pretty cool. It uses the GPS tag on the pictures and places it on the blackberry maps app according to where the picture was taken. Pretty awesome.

Johnny, go to here
Code:
blackberryfaq.com/index.php/BlackBerry_Operating_System_Downloads
and download the Alltel version that came with your phone.

If you have no problems, why would you want to downgrade?

Well after a few days of having this OS, I was able to get a more detailed idea on the problems I'm having.

First problem: I use my phone to connect to my computer via bluetooth, in order to "dial-up" to the alltel data network...basically using my phone as a modem. After the OS install, net still works and everything is fine until I sign off the net on my pc...it takes up to a half an hour before my phone starts sending/receiving data after the net connection to my pc has been turned off. I have no idea why it's doing this, but it's a pain in the butt because I alsmost immediately sign on jivetalk(aim) after I sign off aim on my pc, and now I have to wait half an hour to do that.

Second problem: I was around 18mb free before the OS upgrade, upgraded and had about 20-21MB...downloaded only 2 themes and now I'm around 13mb free space. 2 themes didn't take up over 7mb, more like 1mb.

Third problem: Battery life is almost unheard of after OS upgrade. Today, my battery went from 65% to 20% in what seemed like only 5-6 hours. No programs running, bluetooth off, and I didn't make a single phone call in that time. I think I texted someone 2 or 3 times in that time. Most of that time the phone was locked and in my shirt pocket.

I'm going to delete the 3rd party themes, do a backup, and downgrade to the OS that was posted before this one...since I think Alltel's latest OS still doesn't have the Attachments update that fixes me not being able to view/save e-mail attachments.

Those third party themes can cause problems on the device, including battery life issues. Try deleting those first and see what happens. Any other 3rd party applications?

As far as attachments, all BB OS's contain the BB attachment service. However, not all file types are supported.

The OS that came on my phone let me see that there were attachments, but 90% of the time I couldn't do anything with them. I noticed that Alltel has released a a newer OS since then, so I'm downloading it now.

I just deleted the 3rd party themes, back up to 21mb and the phone is actually running a bit faster. Thanks again for showing me how to do that.

I will hold off the OS downgrade for a day or two, now that those 3rd party themes are removed. If after 1-2 days I'm still having that data problem, and the battery life problem...I'll downgrade to the most recent Alltel OS.

EDIT: I do have three other 3rd party apps. Gmail, JiveTalk and BBweather. I also removed everything from the applications list on my phone that I didn't need or use(googe stuff, yahoo stuff)...and unchecked everything but the essentials when doing the OS upgrade. Averaging around 20mb free at the moment.

Very strange. All Device OS's have been removed from the site for that carrier. No other carriers are offering OS 4.5 yet.
